Book Description

He's faced hordes of screaming children intent upon his destruction. He's endured close confinement with a hostile camel. He even narrowly averted being the star attraction in a Satanic ritual sacrifice. Yet, despite handling these crises with aplomb, poor Midnight is ill-prepared for his latest, greatest adventure: a perilous foray into the affairs of the heart. He knows all there is to know of love that a farm can teach - but will it be enough to see the young goat through his darkest and most trying times?

Midnight's Tale is a 12,000-word literary story of life and love in the treacherous, apple-laden world beyond the comforts of the barn.

Midnight's Tale is included in George's paperback collection Unmarketable Dross, available now at Amazon and elsewhere. It makes a great gift!

5.0 out of 5 stars Clever and imaginative June 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
"[Life] went on, filled not with happy dreams of his flaxen-haired farm girl, but of sheep, who maybe weren't so bad when you really stopped and thought about it, and some magical, faraway place called Nevada."

As a Nevadan, that gave me one of the many solid chuckles throughout this story. Nevada is certainly nice enough, but anyone who's been to our sweeping yellow dirt pit of a state will be equally amused to hear of someone daydreaming about a visit. And this literary short is filled with exactly that type of dry, subtle humor. It's superbly clever and understated. The author has a smart way of turning phrases, which turns something potentially very boring (goats? really?) into one of my favorite reads of the spring.

I enjoyed this quite a bit. It's pretty short, but in a good way. This is a piece that knows not to overstay its welcome. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grab This One by the Horns June 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Midnight's tale is a charming story of love and longing and a poor, confused goat that wanders through a confusing world of grouchy camels, petting zoos, and mysterious rituals in the woods. There are moments of genuine humor and pathos and just-clever-enough writing.

By the end of the story I began to suspect that Midnight's Tale was striking some autobiographical notes, but I don't know the author, so I cannot confirm this hunch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Giggle Along June 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm still giggling my way through this story. Funny, poignant, and clever, this fable of our time documents the coming of age of a young goat as he discovers the wider world. It's a little bit over the top (a llama named Llarry) and a little bit commentary (a disagreeable camel name Harlan), I'm finding it entirely charming and - frankly - glad it's short.

I've got work to do and I can't get to it because I need to finish reading.

Grab a sample. See if you like it as much as I do.

Unique short story as told from the point of view of a goat. Good bedtime reading, but it is not a child's story.

I love goats and I loved this story of the interactions of goats and people. Would love to think that all goats end up as happy as Midnight.

More About the Author

A slightly misanthropic curmudgeon with an infrequent penchant for dark humor, George Berger has perpetrated a body of genre-defying fiction that stands as mute and terrifying testimony to the triumph of emotion over reason.

His first novel, Mendacities, is a dystopian adventure novel praised by reviewers for its "wry and authentic voice", "worst title ever", and "arty-farty pretentious" cover. Following its underwhelming non-success, he released a quirky almost-romantic novella, Stanley And His Sword, which received heady praise for its not-quite erotica sex scenes and unusually sympathetic depiction of ninjas.

His second novel, Without A Spark, became available on Amazon in October 2011. Drawing on his real-life experience as an occasional domestic terrorism suspect (it was all a misunderstanding... honest), it's a gripping thriller about love and ecoterrorism.

These have been followed by a growing succession of short stories and novellas in a bewildering array of genres, including the critically-acclaimed Midnight's Tale, one of Amazon's highest-rated Kindle Singles.

When not writing books that next-to-nobody actually reads, he serves as a freelance intelligence analyst, tinkers with mostly vintage computers, thwarts terrorism, collects books, and thinks up exciting but untrue things to add to his various biographies. He is owned by a cat, rides an antique bicycle, and likes to cook.
