Ok here is another hand clap for another great book! I like Topaz and how AlTonya brought the whole issue of a woman having male friends and how people "perceive" it. Topaz was funny too and some times too sweet for her own good. And the hero Alex...phew! LOL! The way he was described and those eyes. Yea he really had a lot going on with him and when he got...

3.0 out of 5 stars Romance or Suspense?
I love suspense! I have been reading suspense novels for the last 30 of my 40-something years. I have been tainted by the likes of Agatha Christie, Ellery Queen, Sherlock Holmes and Edgar Allen Poe. Even in the romantic suspense genre, I've been touched by Mary Higgins Clark, Nora Roberts, Jayne Ann Krentz (aka Amanda Quick) and Sandra Brown, etc.
AlTonya...

Topaz was funny too and some times too sweet for her own good. And the hero Alex...phew! LOL! The way he was described and those eyes. Yea he really had a lot going on with him and when he got mad...goodness! But still once you understood the war that he had going on within himself it really made my heart go out to him. There is a whole lot of emotion running through this story. I really liked the dialog between the characters (I could relate/that's how I talk with my freinds and such) and the mentioning of music through out the story. Once again BRAVA!!!

Topaz Emerson has always marched by the beat of her own drum and she thrives on her independence. She has always chosen the offbeat over the ordinary, so instead of choosing a law career like her parents, she opens an auto repair garage. When she meets newspaper owner Alexander Rice she doesn't run; she finds the very intense and handsome stranger irresistible.

Alexander Rice is the epitome of every woman's fantasy. He's tall, handsome and wealthy--but he has a secret. For years his thoughts have been invaded by the memories of his days as a contract killer. In spite of his accomplishments, he can't escape his past. When he meets the beautiful and alluring Topaz, he hopes that love may offer him a path to redemption and heal his soul.

When someone starts buying up the businesses in the area, Topaz is threatened for refusing to sell her garage. Alex vows to protect her by any means necessary, but will he he have to kill again to keep her safe? Can Alex and Topaz have a chance at love in the midst of danger?

AlTonya Washington has written a good love story with an interesting storyline. IN THE MIDST OF PASSION is a page-turner that offers the perfect blend of romance and suspense.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent novel, December 24, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: In The Midst Of Passion (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this novel by Altonya Washington. This is my first time reading her work and I am looking forward to reading more of her books (especially the Ramsey saga which has excellent reviews on Amazon). The story is rich and the characters especially Alex are very dynamic and complex which makes them very realistic. Overall, it is an interesting and exciting book that I will be reading again. This book definitely inspires discussion about how much the past matters. 5 stars!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read, October 18, 2007
This review is from: In The Midst Of Passion (Paperback)
I loved this book it was as close to a realistic romance one could get, talk about the path of true love not running smoothly. The timeline for the romance was realisitc, the whole story takes place in a year. Most romance novels do it all in within a week or few months (or seem to-lol)
I enjoyed the suspense of the story but wished there was more of that as well as the romance side. My only beef was the whole long hair thing, the average black women does not have hair sitting on her bum and the sooner the writers in our comminty celebrate our natural, short, medium or long kinky hair the better- this is one eurocentric beauty standard we can do without.

5.0 out of 5 stars In the MIsdst of Passion, October 12, 2007
This review is from: In The Midst Of Passion (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book. I got happy, sad, mad, and PO'd. But all in all it kept my interest. The character Alex, is indeed a character. One minute you think him and Topaz got it together, and the next his past begins to haunt him. Therefore, shutting poor Topaz out. Truly Topaz is a strong woman to still want to be with Alex after what he has put her through. In the end, they are getting themselves together. Keep up the good work Ms. AlTonya. I hope a sequel will come with this one;-)

4.0 out of 5 stars I enjoy this story a lot, November 27, 2006
This review is from: In The Midst Of Passion (Paperback)
I enjoyed this book from start to finish although it took me a while to get through it. Not because it didn't hold my interest, but with the holidays its a busy time of year.
I could feel the intensity of Alex's love to Topaz. I believe you really love someone when you are willing to let them go. The demons of his pass held him hostage, but that just goes to show he had a conscious. Alex was a gentle giant and Topaz was his guardian angel. As always Ms. Washington wrote a very compelling love story, that I feel is worth reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Passion's Promise, November 6, 2006
By
T. Rhythm Knight (Coral Springs, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: In The Midst Of Passion (Paperback)
In the Midst of Passion by Altonya Washington is the story of Topaz Emerson and Alexander Rice. Topaz is beautiful, intelligent, has topaz eyes, and does the one thing few beautiful women do...work on cars for a living. Alexander is nearly seven-feet tall with aqua eyes. As the owner of the Queen City Happenings, a newspaper in Charlotte, Alexander has very little time for dating until he meets Topaz. When the striking two connect, they ignite like fireworks on New Year's Eve. It does not take long for Topaz and Alex to become totally emerged in each other. Despite the electricity that flows between them, secrets from Alex's past prevents them from becoming a couple. When Topaz is placed in danger because she exposes some business dealings of a few shady characters, skeletons begin to fly out of Alex's closet and he vows to stop at nothing u ntil he ensures Topaz is out of harm's way--even if it means exposing the very thing he hopes to keep secret.

Although the plot was interesting, I found this book to drag at times. There were several characters introduced in the story that did not play a role past their introduction. In addition, the characters were often called different names by different friends. For example, Alexander was called, Alex, Zan, or Lex--this proved a little distracting. Despite what I consider an over-abundance in characters and use of nicknames, I found myself cheering for Topaz and Alexander's love in the end.

If you are looking for an entertaining read with a good plot, In the Midst of Passion will keep you turning pages.

4.0 out of 5 stars A romantic suspense!, October 19, 2006
By
This review is from: In The Midst Of Passion (Paperback)
I have to admit that Alex and Topaz's story started off a little slow for me however, it picked up around the middle of the book and took off from there. I've read other Altonya Washington titles and they never disappoint. You will always find a quality story with this author. Keep up the good work and keep them coming.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fall Into the Story of the Devastatingly Handsome Alex Rice, October 2, 2006
By
This review is from: In The Midst Of Passion (Paperback)
When Topaz Emerson and Alex Rice meet by chance, the connection is instant. The affluent North Carolina couple realizes they have a strong attraction and bond. But, when Topaz's take-charge attitude puts her in a life-threatening situation, Alex is forced to confront the demons of his past and must confess the skeletons in his closet to Topaz. The confession leaves him wondering if Topaz could ever love him the same way she did before the ghosts of his past came to haunt the present.

AlTonya Washington easily creates an atmosphere of passion between all of the characters involved in the North Carolina's affluent Black society. This passion effortlessly carries throughout the book as the story's plot intensifies. Washington gives plenty of depth to Alex and Topaz's personalities, as well as the minor characters. However, varied descriptions of the physical attributes of the characters and their surroundings would have added more facets to the characters.

In the Midst of Passion is a dangerous novel that is a definite page turner for those quiet nights at home when readers want to lose themselves in the story of the devastatingly handsome Alex Rice.
