mediocre compared to later works by Weber, July 10, 2009
This review is from: Midway Between (Double Spiral War) (Paperback)
I read this book when it first came out, and ditto for the 2 others in this series. Not bad, I thought at the time. A tale of two human interstellar polities clashing in space naval warfare. Stirring stuff, across a vast canvas.
But notice now that this book and indeed all others by Norwood are out of print. You have to scrounge second hand book stores or the web to find a copy. The books were never reprinted, due to little demand.
Perhaps in no small part because in the 90s, David Weber burst on the scene with his stories of space warfare between human empires. Weber's efforts far outshine this mediocre book. As Weber, and to a lesser extent Drake's continued output, grew in prominence, the attraction of this book and others by Norwood faded. If this read this followed by one of Weber's Harrington works, you'll see the difference.
Another measure of the book's appeal is how the book came out in 1986 and now, 23 years later, I'm the first one to review it.
Candidly, Norwood as a writer was simply outclassed.
