On first listen, the list of comparable artists includes Sheryl Crow, Liz Phair and a host of wispy warblers.. But Walters establishes her turf as somewhere out in left field with the eerie rhythmic ache of 'Fingerprints' and the punch drummer Searles gives to the singer-songwriter gut of 'Sundays.'
-The Austin American Statesman
'Mining a vein somewhere between Kate Bush and fellow Austin thrush Patty Griffin- but with a supple voice all her own- she seduces the listener with alluring songs like the mesmerizing 'Fingerprints' and the echoing folk-rock tango 'Ann Marie.' They all play like friendly whispers in the ear and suggest that this talents level could well be up where the stars shine.'

I wait for the rain to come wash the fingerprints that you left on my face, in my heart, in my veins. Extremely poetic music singing strong lyrics about a relationship that probably isn't worth giving a second thought. Of course we all do. Maggie gives words to pain that is difficult to describe, and we can thank her for that. I know I ll borrow these words for memories that haunt me Shoved it inside and said I d deal with this later . And, of course, later never seems to arrive. The entire album is a meditation on life and relationships; some fun I loved a madman once, I loved a felon once, I did it just because (Midwestern Hurricane), and others more serious, Made you love the little things about me, the very things you loved in me are the things you took away (Sundays). Well-crafted poetry with excellent tunes and fine singing, along with a sensitive back-up band who enhance the music and do not distract. More shoutouts for Under The Table, Girls Like Us, and Be Careful Love. They would not sing if there s no such song. An entertaining Sunday afternoon, complete with thought-provoking delightfully spiced eartaste joy. --The Austin American Statesman, Texas Music Magazine
While music journalists have spent the past decade looking for alt-country stars in Sonic Youth's touring partners and anyone collaborating with Emmylou Harris, they somehow seem to have missed Maggie Walters. After more than a year of sitting on the shelf, (she) has released Midwestern Hurricane, the most somberly beautiful album of the year..
Without the aid of any Stooges covers or six-minute-long audible walls of distortion, Ms. Walters still manages to sound edgier and racier than any of her peers...Tracks like 'Girls Like Us' and 'Captain' are reminiscent of Jewel in lo-fi, but lacking in any kind of put-on grandiosity, leaving their sentiments of sexuality and worship endearingly sincereyet with a silky personal intimacy not likely to be found in the stars of KROQ.
The flawless musicality of the album manages to never be at odds with itself, allowing each piece, whether it be the lazy strum of a guitar string, the prolonged hum of a cello, or the delicately deviant sensuality found in Walters' throaty voice, to imbue the listener with an ineffably gentle pain. The melancholy and erotic delicacy found in the album's sound make it an equally suitable soundtrack for lonely nights at whiskey bars or rainy Sundays spent between the sheets. --High Voltage Magazine
