Puah is a Hebrew midwife in the Land of Egypt where Pharaoh rules like a god. He has proclaimed that all male Hebrew babies are to be slain at birth. Puah is an instrument of the one true God and cannot follow such a command. The story goes on to tell of the coming of Moses in the midst of this strife.

3.0 out of 5 stars The way it may have been
This book provides a very vivid picture of how the events may have unfolded around the time of Moses's birth. It is nice to be able to understand the characters and how they may have acted and felt. At its best, this tale is both informative and moving.

However, this is not a piece of great literature. The story is, sometimes painfully, contrived and trite. The...

This is a book with more than the story of Moses; it is a love story that will reach the very depths of your heart. The author, who is also a midwife, had me in the palm of her hands by the second chapter. Her characters were so real, and their emotions so strong, I am still moved by them now. This is a wonderful story that is fast moving and written with a flow that makes the pages fly by. If you enjoy this book, another similar book of equal quality is QUEENMAKER by India Edgehill. 5.0 out of 5 stars Not enough praise for this book!!, November 28, 2001
This review is from: The Midwife's Song: A Story of Moses' Birth (Paperback)
This is one of those books that I hated to see come to an end...wonderful story from the Bible. This author has a talent for bringing the women of the Bible to life. While reading this book, the reader realizes how special a good midwife was in Egypt in the time of Pharoah. This is a story of Moses' birth and his survival. The sacrifices his mother made to give birth to him and also keep him from being murdered. Here's another example of how wise and sacrificing the women of biblical times were.
I would encourage everyone to read this novel. The writing flows, there are no unnecessary wordy descriptions. Very enjoyable as well as educational.
If you enjoyed Red Tent, Queen maker, or any of Francine Rivers' books....this is a book you do not want to miss reading, enjoying, and discussing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging from the first page, October 30, 2003
This review is from: The Midwife's Song: A Story of Moses' Birth (Paperback)
A wonderfully written and fascinating tale of the midwives Puah and Shiphrah. Brenda Ray brought the characters to life unfolding a story filled with romance, inspiration and gripping drama. A very enjoyable book; I was a bit sad for it to end. I found The Midwife's Song to be a more compelling read than The Red Tent.

This is a truly inspiring novel written by a truly inspiring woman! Brenda Ray took the events leading up to and following the birth of Moses and made it all "come to life"! I have read the story of Moses' birth many, many times over the years but NEVER have I been able to even think into the deepness that Brenda Ray was able to bring out in this book by using the midwives of the Hebrew day in the way she was able to portray them in the book! I shed tears as well as smiles while reading this book! It is one of those " I can't put it down" books! This book was truly enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Bible Comes Alive, January 26, 2001

I could not put this book down! I have an interest in childbirth and midwifery, and just happened to pass by this book. Am I glad I picked it up! This book makes the biblical account of Moses' birth really come alive! The Hebrew midives' story was so compelling. The characters were so real -- I cried through one entire chapter! When I'm reading the Bible, sometimes I don't really think about the details of what actually transpired, and it can be hard to relate to. But this book made me realize what heroic women those Hebrew midwives truly were. I definitely want to read more!

The repetition of phrases like "fine linen" and awkwardly used flashbacks quickly become grating.

The story of Puah is compelling, but the telling of it is not. Despite its weakness, this is still a good read for those who want new insight into a very familiar story.

4.0 out of 5 stars A pleasure to read, March 6, 2001

I heard about this book on the Dr. Laura radio show. In fact, I won it as part of an email contest. I read it in two days, stealing time from my busy life to read it whenever I could. It was a very enjoyable book to read - makes you realize there are real people, emotions, etc. behind the stories in the bible. I have known some of the story of Moses' birth since I was a child but this put it into a much more realistic perspective. Someone else's review mentioned that there was a trilogy planned - I hope so!

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling!, September 14, 2000
This review is from: The Midwife's Song: A Story of Moses' Birth (Paperback)
If this book gets any critical attention it should climb the charts. History and tradition provide the setting, but the compelling qualities of the book are creditable to the author. Ray has woven a very personal and intimate story. There are no cardboard characters here - no Charlton Heston behind a false beard. This story has reality, tenderness and poignancy. It is a woman's book, but one a man can read with pleasure. Historical fiction must be good fiction ahead of all else. The history should be integral to the story, the characters alive, the drama gripping. "The Midwife's Song" passes all these tests. I am excited about this book, and look forward to reading the others in this planned trilogy.

I received this book from listening to the Dr. Laura show and I put it away until my vacation to read it. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. It is a wonderful story about Puah. This author took a few facts from the Bible and made a beautiful life story of a midwife. She brought Puah to life and her romance with Hattush. It was Great. I felt as though I was actually in Egypt, it was incredible. Thanks for the opportunity to read this book.
