Never thought I would be thrilled to get a vacuum cleaner. This one has everything you could want -- it cleans GREAT, it is amazingly quiet, the HEPA filtering is top notch, the controls and the tools are convenient, the power cord reaches forever, the materials used in this machine are built to last, and on top of all of that, it looks gorgeous (I know, I know, it's a vacuum!).
My one and only reservation was that it was on the heavy side. This reservation was quickly allayed when I actually used this Miele upright at home (the dealer kindly lend it to me to try at home.) The maneuverability is phenomenal. No more plowing forward and backward to move a couple inches to the left or right. Just twist your wrist and the vacuum swivels and turns on a dime. It's *amazing* how much effort this saves! I compared this vacuum to the Sebo Automatic X4 and the Sebo Felix. The X4 is the noisiest of the bunch, and it doesn't swivel (which both the Felix and the Miele do), although it is a solidly great machine. The Felix is the lightest, and it swivels, but is the only one that doesn't have automatic height adjustment, a feature that lets you vacuum right over throw rugs without the vacuum eating the rug. Price-wise, the Felix was about $100 less than the X4 which is about $120 less than the Miele Bolero. I ended up selecting the Miele because overall it had every useful feature and was the most convenient to use. I like the size of the Sebo Felix, but it was a little too fussy (too many parts that come on and off) and the hose didn't have an extension, so I couldn't reach the cobwebs up high. Any one of these three would be great to own. The Miele is just a little ahead in terms of features and convenience. Oh, and about the high price: I am replacing three (crappy, smelly, loud) old vacuums (Hoover, Kenmore, Eureka), and if you add up how much they all cost, I would have been better off getting the "expensive" Miele to start with. I expect it will last a very very long time.

Great Vacuum - The best I've ever experienced,

Miele Bolero Upright S7580 (Deep Black)
I have used this vacuum for a month now. It is very quiet compared to my old Eureka. There is NO exhaust odor and my carpets are in better condition now than ever before! This vacuum is a joy to use. The swivel neck navigates the vacuum very well and with the carpet brush toggle on, the vacuum powers itself forward. Vacuuming with the Bolero is a joy, not a chore. I vacuum 3 times as often as I used to. The floor toggle lifts the roller brush allowing me to vacuum my rugs and non-carpeted floors very easily without worry that I will damage them. The long power cord means I only have to unplug and move the cord once in order to reach everywhere in my apartment (1220 sq feet apt). The ability to control the power of the suction is a great added bonus. The lower the suction, the quieter the vacuum becomes. I also like that the tool extension is aluminum. The tools themselves fit snugly into the back of the vacuum out of the way but always there. Again, this is a well designed vacuum. (I am an Apple fan and like Apple products -- this vacuum appealed to me because of it's great design as well as it's ability to just get things done well.) To address what the first reviewer noted, the power cord gets a little bit warm but not worrisome. My laptop gets warmer. My old vacuum cord got warm too. The exhaust is also warm, but I've never had a vacuum that didn't have warm exhaust so other than commenting that it is warm (not hot) there is nothing I can add here. The vacuum feels and looks well designed, well built, and sturdy. The slower ramp up power on motor is nice and seems well built and long lasting. The only difference between this model and the 2 other models in this line, besides price, is that this model is in black rather than color and is lacking the hepa filter alert light. I write the date on the filter itself as the manual suggests. I purchased this model locally because I wanted to test drive this and the Sebo. The dealer took $100.00 off and added a free hepa filter replacement, a box of bags, and 5 years of free maintenance service. I am thrilled to have a nice looking, great working vacuum that I actually want to use. Followup 12/16/2009 Vacuum continues to be a pleasure. My 2 favorite things, still, are the quiet and powerful motor, and the swivel neck. I often turn the vacuum off accidently when trying to change carpet to floor, but I also enjoy the smooth ramp up of the motor... this really is a quality machine. I am also ever grateful for the upper cord winder clips after breaking my ankle (boot makes it hard to stoop) and with my growing age it's just easier to not have to stoop or bend after cleaning for a few hours.

A word of caution to the Amazon community:
As of 16 December 2010, according to Miele, the warranty on this vacuum will NOT be honored by Miele, unless the vacuum is purchased from an authorized Miele dealer. Perplexingly, Miele does not provide a list of authorized Miele internet dealers. According to Miele, the ONLY way to identify an authorized Miele dealer is by the Miele banner on the seller's website. Furthermore according to Miele, this banner is a copyrighted banner, and only Miele authorized dealers are permitted to legally display it. Obviously, this banner could be displayed, legally or illegally by any internet merchant. So as a word of caution, call Miele to verify a merchant is an authorized Miele dealer.

Who'd Have Thought a Vacuum Cleaner Could be Exciting?,

Well, I've only had this baby two days now, but I have to say it's been interesting. For 15 years now I've owned nothing but Kirby vacs, and the last one exploded on me last weekend. I nearly called Kirby for a new one, but every Kirby I've owned has cost more than a grand, and I was tired of paying that much for something that smelled so bad.
Hubby wasn't around when the Miele arrived, but I was able to get the thing out of the box, put it together, and figure out how it worked without him -- a point in its favor already. And included was a well-written user's guide -- how cool is that in this era of impossibly bad writing? The thing is heavy, without a doubt. I foresee developing some triceps after using it for a while, but that's not a bad thing. I love the swivel head -- it's more maneuverable than any upright vac I've had before. And the design screams efficiency. The Kirby had more attachments but they were in a box out in the garage, untouched. This one has all the attachments built into the body of the vacuum, easy to access and use. I used two of them the first day. The long cord was a plus -- I had an extension cord permanently attached on the Kirby, but this one doesn't need it. Plenty long enough for my 1500-square foot house. The motor is much quieter than the Kirby -- didn't even have to put the dogs outside when I used it. They just stood and watched it, unlike the Kirby which made them all bark frantically and try to attack it. And finally, no bad smell. No matter how often I changed bags on the Kirby it stank. This vacuum doesn't smell. Maybe it's the additional filters, maybe the special bags -- I'm not technical enough to know. I just know it doesn't stink. But it does suck! Very nice both on suction and air flow; even used it to dust a ceiling fan. Here's looking forward to a long and happy working relationship.

I guess my caption about sums it up. Rather than give their engineers a price point to design to, Miele designs and then sets the price. This is my 3rd Miele appliance, and they all just work. Not lots of bells, whistles, colored brushes and see through canisters - just a unit that works the way it should and does it with finesse. For what it is worth, despite regular (daily) vacuuming with a Hoover and a Sebo, when we tried the Miele for the first time, everyone in the room looked up when they heard the sand being sucked up by the Bolero. We couldn't believe it. It was like having a Kirby salesman demonstrating how dirty your old vacuum left the floor - (except we knew the dirt didn't fall out of anyone's pant cuff:)...) In addition to it's effectiveness, it is a delight to use - my children are still debating who gets to vacuum a couple of weeks later. (What does that tell you?) Needless to say - another Meile home run.
Remember, as my Dad used to say: "When you buy quality, you only cry once!"

I'm not a fussy housekeeper, but I have a cat with soft short hair that merges with the fibers of our oriental carpets, and her fur fuses with dust balls becoming a weighty floor cover on it's own... And I had been using a Hoover vacuum upright, using the crevice tool and going over the carpets in small areas (taking about 2 hours to vacuum).
With the Miele Bolero Upright there is enough suction that I do the carpets in 10 minutes and the floors in about 40 min (whole house). It's easy to shift from the upright to the hose and tools. My husband says it has headlights! I m totally happy with the vacuum; it's worth the cost! Only concern for some might be that it has too much suction so that small bits (screws, rubber bands, etc) get sucked up before you can bend down to pick them up!

This is a great, versatile, very maneuverable german vacuum. the versions without the digital power display, i.e., with the analog nob, probably are just as good, though i never saw one in real life to try one. the only danger is the little step-on lever to release the upright: it can cut your foot quite good as it has a sharp plastic edge on it, and it's a bit oversized.
no regrets on this purchase,e ven though pricey, because it just works very well and will last many many years. probably would get the analog dial though if i were giving a gift of such.

I've always heard such great things about Miele: how well-built its vacuums are and how long they last, how well the company stands behind its warranty and how serviceable these machines are in all their parts should something go awry. It also helps that there's a Miele authorized vendor and service center right here in town that I can use (though obviously I chose Amazon for the best price). So, when it came time to replace my worn out old "cheap" vacuum, I knew what brand I was looking for.
The price did make me leery, I admit, and I also considered cheaper models like the S7 Jazz, which is on par with Dyson prices. However, in the end I chose the Bolero despite the higher price, because of the extensive additional features offered. I have to say, I'm glad I did. Let me start by saying the aesthetics of the unit are excellent. It's an extremely attractive machine, very sleek lines and excellent displays, and all its attachments are well-blended into the body when they're not out being used. This is all matched by its wonderful ergonomics. The unit is LIGHT; I can pick it up (via the very convenient, excellently mid-body-placed carrying handle) and cart it around with just one hand without any effort. My old vac was so heavy it required two hands, and it didn't have a carrying handle at all. The operating handle/grip is comfortable and very easy on the hand, and because of its light weight and that excellent "swivel neck" feature, the unit itself is a breeze to push about. It's almost too easy! The attachments come out of their sleek housings easily and work like a charm. I'm also an instant fan of the "snap-in" dust bags. I prefer bagged vacs in general, but this snap-in feature is a fantastic enhancement that makes swapping bags a 10 second, no-fuss affair. This machine was only delivered a few hours ago, and already I've run it through my entire house and put it through all the paces. I especially put its "automatic" setting to the test, running it from carpet to kitchen tile to bathroom vinyl (great for getting up loose debris before a mopping), and it didn't miss a beat as it switched between them all effortlessly. I love the extra long cord; I don't have to constantly stop and find a new outlet for every single room I move to like my old vacuum. I can pretty much do half my 1900 square foot house from one central outlet! Let me tell you, it sure made me realize how crappy my old vac was, too. I thought my carpets were pretty well tended to, but the amount of stuff this machine sucked up amazed me. I had no idea the old one was leaving so much behind! The wand-and-hose affair is also great. It's easy to pull out and use, and has an extension to get nice and high; very helpful for reaching the ceiling fan in the living room, way up on the vaulted ceiling. Also makes baseboards a breeze, as well as getting into nooks and crannies, and even dusting furniture with the wand plus the brush attachment on the end. When not in use the hose and wand tuck in sleekly and blend right into the unit. The vacuum is described as "quiet", which I think it depends on your point of view. Make no mistake: no one's going to sleep through this vac's usage. However, I don't expect a vacuum to be whisper-quiet in the first place, as good, strong suction and proper air-flow are going to make noise by their nature. Still, having said this, compared to my old vacuum this one is like a purring cat. My old vac was so loud I actually wore ear protection when using it; no joke! At least as far as vacuums go, you bet I think this one's quiet. Its volume is most definitely comfortable to my ears, even after running through the whole house with it. To sum up, even after just a few hours of "playing" with it, I already feel this is the best vacuum I have ever owned and I suspect I will be holding onto it for a very long time indeed.

I spent the last few days doing nothing but research on a new vacuum. I hate cleaning my house but I enjoy vacuuming. Maybe its the idea of seeing something accomplished with the lines in the carpet, I dont know. I've had my Simplicity Synergy for about 5 years now and it has been a great vacuum. However, lately I've been feeling like Im just not getting everything I can out of my carpet. So you know what Im working with, I installed about 1 inch long shag carpets wall to wall in my house when I moved in 3 years ago. Had someone told me how annoying they would be to vacuum, I would never have installed it. Sure, its super comfortable to walk around on but you can lose your remote control in it if you aren't paying attention.Anyway, I ended up deciding between the Miele or the new Dyson DC41. Everyone I know was telling me to get a Dyson but I've always disliked them and thought they were all hype. I dont like the idea of spending several hundreds of $$ on something completely made out of plastic. I know I said I replaced my Simplicity with the Miele but I wanted to go through the back story of the research I did to get me to that point. I read every review I could find and watched every video on youtube that was on either one of these vacuums. The whole time I kept going back to "why is either one better than my current vacuum?". I wanted to stay at the same level of equipment that I was accustomed to so features were a big deal to me. I really liked the lights on the front of my vacuum, I dont want to turn every light on in the house to see where Im vacuuming, the lights are a big help. The Dyson didn't have any lights, the Miele did (Strike one). I am used to having a bag to change and the fact that the bag, for me, lasts about 3 full house vacuumings, I liked that. I played with a Dyson in the store and flipping the canister open was an awkward experience and sent a plume of dust up in the air over the garbage can. Didn't I just try to keep that from going in the air by using a "sealed" vacuum? My buddy responded with this scenario that he dumps his in the garbage in the garage. I asked why I would want to go out to the cold garage every time just to dump my vacuum(which you should do after every vacuum and not leave the dirt in there)?(Strike two). Then I checked maneuverability. The Dyson with the ball does have a good thing going on, very easy to move around. The Miele was also surprisingly very easy to move around with its swivel body. I realized how antiquated my Simplicity was at that point and how much I had been struggling with it in the past. Anyway, it was a tie on that one. Then there was the noise test. I have to be honest, I've never heard a quieter vacuum than the Miele. It has amazing suction even on the lowest setting and I could have a normal conversation with it on. I dont know if this was really something to push me to either side but it was like night and day between the Dyson and Miele. The coolest thing about the Dyson is the ability to actually see that you're picking up dirt and how much of it you're actually getting. With the bag in the Miele I had to keep opening the cover and squeezing it to see how much I was collecting. Not a big deal but the Dyson wins on knowing conveniently when to clean/dump the dirt. The last thing I tested was how easy it was to move from carpet to floor. The Miele actually has this really unique automatic height adjuster for the roller brush and it worked quite well going from different carpet types. The Dyson didn't really have anything like that unless I manually adjusted it. I have to manually adjust my Simplicity so going to the automatic feature was pure win for me. I think this last part took it over the top for me. I really got tired of switching the knob on the bottom of my Simplicity for whatever height of carpet I was on. The fact that I wouldn't have to do that anymore with the Miele pretty much sealed the deal. Other things I liked about the Miele was its low clearance. You could get almost half a foot under low couches and such, the Dyson only a couple inches at best. Plus the Miele is rather flat overall and was easy to maneuver around corners when in a lower position. The Dyson with the canister on the front felt a little unbalanced. The weight of the two units was almost equal but the balance was much better on the Miele. My local retailer matched all internet pricing, gave me a free box of bags and included free lifetime maintenance on the vacuum. Even though they sell Dysons there, and I was comparing it back and forth, the salesperson said theres no reason I should consider the Dyson over the Miele. Regardless of price(they sold vacuums that were well into the 4 figures) she said the Miele I was looking at was the best vacuum available on the market. She said I had 7 days to try it at home with no problems of returning it if I didn't like it. I just brought it home and tried it out. I had just vacuumed yesterday so I was eager to see if it was all baloney and was able to keep my old vacuum and save money. I did a few passes over an area that is heavy traffic by myself and my cat that I normally do about 5 passes with my Simplicity just to make sure I've gotten everything. i was shocked to hear all the dirt clicking against the side of the suction tube. I was almost embarrassed thinking my carpet was still this dirty. I kept going over all my floor and found that the vacuum was really easy to push around. It seemed that the width of the head was also just a smidgen smaller and was fitting between legs of chairs much easier. The swivel body made turning corners and working around those same chairs a breeze. I ended up going over my whole house again. Another thing I found amazing was the cord length. I thought my Simplicity had a long cord but the Miele was super long. I only had to plug it in one outlet on the bottom floor or the top floor to vacuum every room on said floor. No more switching outlets! After all was done I opened the cover and inspected the bag. It was a quarter full. I was amazed and grossed out at the same time. I really thought my Simplicity was the best when I bought it. Clearly it has been rivaled with the Miele. I had decided that I was now keeping it. I walked around the house admiring my work and noticed something else. My house didn't have any smell to it. I have air fresheners in all parts of my house. One sent downstairs, one in my bedroom and one in my master bath. Walking around my house I smelled nothing but...fresh. It was weird. The vacuum actually sucked the scent out of the air too! Ill report back in 7 days and let you know the verdict if Im keeping it completely or decided to return it. However, I think we all know the outcome at this point. |
