I was a little apprehensive about spending more than $200 on a stick vacuum, but the Miele S163 is definitely worth it. First of all, it's quiet, so you definitely don't need to turn it off to hear the phone/doorbell ring. The best thing about it is the amazing suction...my carpet looked brand-new and my sofa hasn't been as lint-free since I bought it. The S163 does not come with the HEPA filter like the S168 does (but you can get one for less than $110, which is what the price difference is). The S163 comes with two attachments: the crevice nozzle and upholstery brush. It has a carpet/floor switch, too, and works wonders on my hardwood floors. The electrical cord is nice and long (I can vacuum a few rooms of my small condo at a time without having to unplug). All in all, a great buy!

We live in a large condominium with all hardwood floors. The Miele S163 works great for a place like ours...it sucks up all the junk messing up our floors... crumbs and dust are completely gone with a quick swipe--it's really light and has a long cord --and has a lot of power. We have a few area rugs and it cleans them really well. We recommend this vacuum -

We have owned this Miele vacuum cleaner for 9 years. It is still wonderful. It is by far the best vacuum cleaner I have ever owned. The only things we have had to replace on it, is it's bag and HEPA filters. The vacuum has needed no repairs. I have used it to clean not only the floor, but also the furniture and drapes. My husband has allergies, and this was a large part of the reason we bought it. Other vacuums stirred up too much dust and caused his allergies to act up. Not with the Miele.
It is quieter than any vacuum I have ever used.
I don't think it is superior because of the extra money we paid for, I think it is superior because of it's lasting power, excellent cleaning capabilities, and low maintenance.

I am happy with the ease of use, power, and portability of this vacuum cleaner. We had a canister before that needed so much storage space and parts to be put together before we can use it. Now, the upright is just there and ready to go. It cleans our hardwood floors, tile bathroom, kitchen linoleum, and office rug area very efficiently. I noticed that the dust doesn't blow around or settle on the floor but is actually sucked into the bag! The HEPA filter addition is a plus with 2 cats! I highly recommend it. It is a bit on a "heavy side" (about 10lbs.), so that's a consideration. But for me, it's a good way to workout my arms.

I have always purchased not bottom line upright vacuum cleaners but moderately priced upright vacuums from Target etc. You spend an average $150 dollars and they break after 8 months. I have always lived in small apartments so I have been through at least 3 moderately priced uprights made by Eureka etc. Well I decided to try the Miele S163 and straight out of the box it was a revelation. It was so powerful and solid and I fell in love instantly. It wasn't loud like the Eurekas I've owned. I live in a small jr. one bedroom in Brooklyn and I can dismantle the vacuum and it fits underneath my sink! After vacuuming there was no odor in the air from dust. It is heavy duty, operates extremely well, has powerful suction and its solid state and operation made me feel confident. I'm never going back to any other brand. This is hands down the best vacuum cleaner I have ever purchased. Sometimes Consumer Reports leaves out brands in their reviews or disqualifies a brand because they are more expensive and simply put too well made--they figure no one is interested in paying for top quality anymore. It is penny wise and pound foolish to buy a mediocre vacuum every three years. This one is going to last me at least 10 years.

We recently bought this Miele vacuum as we heard it was good for cat hair and allergies. We added the Hepa filter because it was recommended online, esp. if the household has a couple of pets, like we do. Through reading other reviews, we gathered that this smallish Miele was ideal for a space like ours: hardwood floors, a couple of carpets, not huge.

The vacuum is just a bit heavy-feeling, but its not bad at all. The pivoting works very well, and the suction is great. It really seemed to do a good job. It also stores very easily, hanging by its handle on a hook or a nail in a closet.

It is also a really attractive piece of machinery. I gave it the full five stars because I do "love it" at this point. Hope it holds up well, I think it will.

After much research into stick vacuums and buying and disposing of three other models in the last two years I finally (and reluctantly) decided to invest in the Miele S163 and am thrilled with its performance. My experience with the other stick vacuums had convinced me that:
1. Anything cordless or rechargeable was absolutely worthless
2. A powerful motor is required to defy gravity in not only picking up dirt but holding it in the dirt chamber
3. Bagless models are high maintenance
I wanted an easily accessible vacuum I could operate with one arm to frequently clean hardwood and tile floors of cat hair, cat litter, food crumbs and stuff that gets dragged in from outside and also to pick up surface dirt on rugs and carpet. The Miele's performance for all these tasks is exceptional.

By contrast, the last stick vacuum I owned before this was the Oreck ElectrikBroom, which was a complete waste of money because it:
1. Only picked up retained hair and fine dust; it barely picked up crumbs and fine cat litter and when it did would drop them right back on the floor when the the motor was turned off.
2. Would perform for less than 15 minutes on a charge
3. Had to be cleaned out after every use.
4. Was difficult to maneuver around furniture because of its cumbersome floor nozzle.

The Miele has a flexible and streamlined floor nozzle, a powerful, but not too noisy, motor that can pick up and hold sizable objects (including coins), uses disposable bags, and never loses power because its 25-foot cord plugs into an outlet. I would not recommend
it to thoroughly clean rugs and carpet but it does a reasonably good job of removing surface debris.
