Amazon.com Review

The Might & Magic series of role-playing games has been around for a long time with good reason--they are extremely addictive. Few other games in this crowded genre give players so much to do at all times, and it is this never-ending saga of questing that has always let players forgive the series' repetitive gameplay and drab graphics.

Might & Magic VII: For Blood and Honor unfortunately suffers from both of those faults, but that's almost to be expected given the game's enormous scope, vast environments, and dozens of miniquests. The entire game world is rendered in 3-D, giving players hills to climb (or eventually fly over), valleys to cross, and canyons full of traps to traverse. Combat can be a little boring, consisting mainly of shooting enemies or casting spells from a distance, but in the end the richness of the game universe won us over. We sat mesmerized for weeks, looking for new weapons, searching for better spells, or just seeing how powerful our characters could get. We even spent countless hours in the game's many taverns playing ArcoMage, a card battle game where the object is to use the abilities of your cards to destroy your opponent's tower.

ArcoMage is like a microcosm of Might & Magic VII in that you sit there bleary eyed at 4 a.m. wondering how something with such simplistic gameplay mechanics could possibly be so addictive. We don't care how they did it; all we know is that we have to get back to Might & Magic VII for a few more hours of exploration, questing, and unadulterated role-playing fun. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Enormous game world to explore
  • Hundreds of items, spells, and weapons to collect and compare
  • The ArcoMage minigame is a nice addition to an already compelling game
Cons:
  • Shallow, repetitive gameplay (especially the combat)
  • Bad graphics

5.0 out of 5 stars Might and Magic 7 - Review, December 29, 1999
This review is from: Might and Magic 7: For Blood & Honor (CD-ROM)
The 7th installment of Might and Magic continues the TRUE RPG that Might and Magic was in the previous games. No the 3D grapics are not like the Newest programs, but for a good Role Playing game this is one of the better ones. No need to spend big dollars on a Pentium III, it plays fine on a Pentium 200, or AMD or Cyrix CPU. I personally prefer the first-person grapics of this type of game over the top down smaller characters in some other games. In this game you play as multiple characters, and can have others join your party, not a Single character as in some games. This game also has turn based play, which is prefered by previous players of the other Might and Magic games. IF you want total real time game play buy an ACTION game, RPG's in my opinion require turn-based play to be enjoyed properly. Total Action games might as well be played on CONSOLE machines(Playstation, N64,etc.) , otherwise you are not using any of the features available on a PC system. I hope 3DO continues to write games like Might and Magic 7.

4.0 out of 5 stars An addicting pleaser in a proven form, November 19, 1999
This review is from: Might and Magic 7: For Blood & Honor (CD-ROM)
Although Might and Magic 7: For Blood & Honor is not very different then it's predecessor, Might and Magic 6, it is just as fun. I admit that this game doesn't do much for originality, but I don't think all new games need to be original. This game takes a winning formula and just uses it again! If you liked #6, #7 is more then worth it. If you didn't like, or were ambivilant toward #6, then For Blood & Honor is probably not your cup of tea either.

I enjoyed playing Might and Magic VII. The storyline kept you moving along, and the interactions with the different geographic areas made most of the questing fun and worthwhile. The game is heavy on killing and light on puzzles, I suppose I'd like a little more balance there. However, I'd like to commend the creators on one thing above all else, ARCOMAGE. A game within the game, played in the inns throughout the land, was really fun. I love the fact that there are two different paths to take (good/light vs. evil/dark). That makes the game replayable at least twice. Playing around with the character classes is good for another game or two as well. My only strong criticism is that the dark side quests were buggy, and I had to download the patch and restart my dark side game to get my final warlock and lich promotions.
