4.0 out of 5 stars The Invasion, before and after, February 6, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mighty Avengers Vol. 4: Secret Invasion, Book 2 (v. 4, Bk. 2) (Hardcover)
There were a lot that didn't dig Secret Invasion, but I did, and found it more satisfying than World War Hulk or Civil War were. In any case, Secret Invasion maestro Brian Michael Bendis' arcs on New Avengers and Mighty Avengers during the Secret Invasion run were quite good, as evidenced here in the fourth collected volume of Mighty Avengers, which collects the last five issues of the Secret Invasion tie-ins. Warning that from here on out, spoilers are ahead for those who haven't read Secret Invasion yet. It begins with finally revealing just what happened to Elektra and how she was switched out with a Skrull doppleganger. Needless to say, she goes down fighting. After that, we find the faux-Hank Pym making a decision that his fellow Skrulls don't like too much, followed by a detailing of Nick Fury gearing up his Secret Warriors for the massive battle to come. We also get a depth-filled issue involving the Skrull impersonating Captain Marvel, and what ramifications his actions have on the imprisoned Marvel Boy. The best is saved for the end however, as the heroes gather for the funeral of the Wasp, and we see Hank Pym's reactions to everything he's missed while he was captured and missing; which includes the House of M, Civil War, the death of Captain America, and World War Hulk. There's great artwork from Khoi Pham, Stefano Caselli, Carlo Pagulayan, Lee Weeks, and Jim Cheung; and Bendis' storytelling remains in fine form. All in all, out of all the Secret Invasion tie-in's, the New Avengers and Mighty Avengers trades are undoubtedly the best there are, and are definitely worth your time if you dug Secret Invasion in the least.

2.0 out of 5 stars Beware!, June 3, 2009
Don't read the Mighty Avengers Secret Invasion books unless you have the other books that tie in. I don't and I found that this book on it's own doesn't make sense. Wasp's funeral?...umm, when did she even die? The first two Mighty Avengers collections with the Ultron Initiative and Venom Bomb are great. This...art not as good, missing pieces, not a lot of actual Avengers featured...not so much.

1.0 out of 5 stars no more bendis, please, November 20, 2009
Brian Bendis has to be the most unimaginative writer to be given free reign at Marvel. The vocabulary and pacing he gives to his stories are like if someone tried to write about how "real people" talk if the only life experience the author actually had was watching TV and listening to groups of ugly teenage girls try to assure each other that they're cool. Bendis started really irking me with House of M, an entirely bogus waste of time and money in which Scarlet Witch - whose powers have always been vague, especially since Avengers West Coast - is suddenly able to dream away over 90% of earth's superpowered population. As a single issue "What If?" this could have been entertaining, but a maxiseries of this idea could have only maintained interest if it was filled with action, suspense, and some kind of continuity. But it's dry, unmotivated, and simply uninteresting outside of the 2 second shock value of "what if everything you know about the Marvel U. was suddenly changed?" If you can imagine watching "Cops" but with no crimes ever being committed, and if every few minutes, the show focussed on a different cop with no criminals to hassle or arrest, you'll get a good taste for what Bendis brings to the table. This analogy applies to almost all of Bendis writing, particularly Daredevil. I guess Marvel wanted him to really outdo himself and show us what he's got with "Secret Invasion", where once again "everything you know about the Marvel Universe changes"- only this time, Bendis randomly chooses characters that should supposedly have been Scrulls for the past 1 to 10 years. It's done so randomly that it's an insult to anyone who has actually read comics since before he became an overhyped bigshot in comics and knows that there is no possible way these characters could have been Scrulls the whole time without anybody knowing. And to end it all with Norman Osborn killing the Scrull Queen with a lucky shot while thousands of superheroes infinitely more powerful than him are stumped by the Scrull threat is lamer than belief. We already have Punisher. Why his modern garbage gets so much reprint is ridiculous to me when guys like Steve Gerber have only a couple trade paperbacks of their material out there. How bout a color reprint of Man-Thing, or the oldschool Foolkiller?
