The best booklight I've ever used,
By
This review is from: Mighty Bright TravelFlex Book Light, Black (Kitchen)
I purchased both the Mighty Bright TravelFlex and the XtraFlex (1 not 2), so I'm posting this review for both products. I wasn't sure which would work better for me, or which would provide better light. After using both, I can't really tell any difference in the amount of light each puts out. Both work great, and are easily the best booklights I've ever used. I used to have an Itty Bitty non-LED light, with the old style battery brick, which was beyond cumbersome. Lately, I've purchased several LED lights from local stores, but none of them got the job done. The main problems were: light not bright enough, light not dispersed properly, and clip/neck not designed properly. All of these have been solved by Mighty Bright.
1. Brightness: For both lights, the single LED puts out bright white light. I was surprised that the single battery TravelFlex seemed to put out as much light as the 3 battery XtraFlex. Not sure what the difference actually is or why one needs 3 batteries, but to my eye they were the same. I was thinking about getting the XtraFlex 2, but didn't based on some reviews that stated people only used 1 of 2 LED's. I would imagine the XtraFlex 2 to be VERY bright with both LED's on, and would be overkill for regular reading. Both of the lights I purchased easily lit up both pages of a standard sized book. 2. Dispersion: Unlike cheaper lights, both Mighty Bright lights have a dispersion lens, creating an even light across both pages of a book. Cheap lights give you a hot spot with decreasing light away from the center, much like a regular flash light would provide. With the Mighty Brights, both pages were properly lit from top to bottom, and I don't have to adjust the light at all when moving from line to line and page to page. These lights are designed perfectly in this respect! 3. Clip/Flex necks: Here's where these two lights differ. Both clip securely to the book, although the TravelFlex wiggled a little more due to the smaller clip, but it wasn't falling over or anything. I was using a paperback, and I'm sure a hardback would make them even more secure. The XtraFlex has a slightly longer flex neck, allowing you to put the light head up and over the book a little further, perhaps giving a SLIGHTLY more even light. But, the TravelFlex neck is plenty long for lighting the pages. On both lamps, the flex necks are flexible yet sturdy, so you can put the light head wherever you want and it actually stays there! I've used several lights in which you either could not get the head in the right place because the neck was so stiff or the head would fall because the neck was so loose. Neither problem exists on the Mighty Brights. For clips, the XtraFlex has a much bigger clip, which can actually be used as a stand to allow you to use the XtraFlex as a small desk light. This is actually very handy as a small light next to a laptop computer or if you have any writing to do at a desk but don't want to light up the whole room. The TravelFlex doesn't allow for this, but the smaller size is geared toward travel and the TravelFlex can be folded up into a smaller package than the MightyFlex (which is still pretty small, and either light will probably fit into any travel bag you use). The bigger clip on the XtraFlex also would allow to more easily clip to a headboard, the top of a laptop screen, etc. In the end, both of these are GREAT lights. It is so nice to find proper design, as though someone actually tested these lights on a book in a dark room. Imagine that! Other lights I've turned on, and immediately known they wouldn't work. I've actually rubber-banded tissues over a travel light head to try and get dispersed light, which Mighty Bright has accomplished with a nice lens. The light is bright, white, and clean, and the LED's will last forever. I'm hoping the batteries last a long time, too. The TravelFlex came with one AAA installed; the XtraFlex came with 6 AAA's, 3 to use and 3 as back up. I'll have to see if the extra batteries make any difference in the long run. If you read in the dark, buy a Mighty Bright, you won't regret it!

This light is even better than advertised! It is so light weight that I don't even notice it when clipped to my book. It is close to infinitely adjustable because of its flexible neck and stable in any position. The light is plenty bright for me and its intensity can be adjusted by positioning. Even the included, "Brand X" battery lasted for weeks and a fully charged NiMH battery seems to last about as long as it lasts just sitting on the shelf. It is also great to use as a flashlight so you don't need to carry both. A remarkable product at an excellent price.

I looked at several different lights to use with my Kindle. My priorities were:
1. Enough light 2. Compact. 3. Of reasonable quality To determine if I wanted a light with one or two LEDs, I used a couple of Photon Microlights to see what was needed. One LED was enough. (I understand there are enormous differences in throw between LEDs types, but a guy's gotta start *somewhere*) I also read several reviews by owners of the Might Bright Ultra Flex2 who mentioned they didn't need both emitters going at the same time. The bottom line is, this is a compact, battery-efficient light that gives plenty of illumination to read the Kindle in the dark. As to its quality, I've had if for about 2 months and its still working. Dave

I was a little disappointed to discover that the Kindle 2 did not have a built in backlight for reading in the dark but set out to find a good, inexpensive book light that could go with it.
I came across this light on sale for less than $10.00 and decided to give it a try. First of all, I bought this somewhat last minute before I went on a long car trip that would involve my reading my Kindle (and regular books) in the dark. The service was super fast and my light arrived within 2 days, the day before I was supposed to leave. The packaging was "frustration free" as described and it was easy to open it and get everything out. Battery was included and the light was good to go from when I opened the package. I immediately tried it on my Kindle. Here's where the one and only problem hits: it doesn't like to clip onto the Kindle itself. In fact, it completely rejects the naked Kindle and launches itself across the room in protest. But this is where another good point reveals itself: several tries and several launches (I'm stubborn) proved that this lamp survives being dropped to the floor. Probably wouldn't survive being thrown hard to the floor or stomped on but neither would the Kindle or a lot of other things. But since I'm a klutz and tend to fumble things, sturdiness is a definite point in favor of any particular object. I have a Kindle cover (again, from the inexpensive end of the selections) and the clip on the light slides perfectly onto the "spine" of the cover and happily stays there. The lamp neck is easily adjustable to cast light fully over the entire 6" screen without glare. While regular room lighting is certainly preferable, I am very happy reading with this light while my sweetie sleeps, or while we are in the car (in which case she is driving, not sleeping). Anyway, I like this little light and it was certainly a good value for the money!

Excellent To Use With Kindle,

I wanted something to use with my Kindle as it isn't backlit. I bought a leather cover to protect it and this booklight clips on perfectly. Good light on book, not spotty like those cheap ones that are LED. I've had many booklights, by far the best. I also have the other Mighty Bright booklight with the two bulbs, also a great product. This product has just one bulb but is more than enough. Packs great for travel.

TravelFlex vs. XtraFlex,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mighty Bright TravelFlex Book Light, Black (Kitchen)
I have both the XtraFlex & the TravelFlex Mighty Bright lights. I love the way both light up the entire screen, no "dark spots". Both lights need to be used with either a regular book or an ereader with a cover in order for the lights to clip onto something. I prefer the TravelFlex as it is lighter (easier for reading in bed) and uses 1 AAA battery rather than 3 AAA bateries. Also as someone who never leaves the house without their Kindle I prefer the fact that my TravelFlex has an on/off switch (harder to switch it on by accident while in my purse) rather than the on/off button on my XtraFlex(I constantly find that something in my purse has bumped into this light and turned it on).
I love both lights and I fully believe that this company makes an excellent book light (tried other brands that wouldn't work right out of the box), but I do find myself reaching for the TravelFlex more often.

Lightweight Travel Model,

This review is from: Mighty Bright TravelFlex Book Light, Black (Kitchen)
I bought this 1-bulb light/1battery because it weights less than the 2 bulb/2 battery model (also I read another review here that an owner of the 2 bulb model was not using the 2nd bulb). However, after it has been on for a while, the light seems to blink, making it harder to read.

I bought this light for paperback books. I've gone through several lights and while some worked great for the Kindle (M-Edge e-Luminator2 Booklight for Amazon Kindle (Fits 6" Display, 2nd gen)) they didn't work so great for real DTB (Dead Tree Books). In addition I'm completely spoiled by my Kindle and now I expect to be able to read for long periods without needing to move around to catch the good light. The way my room is set up the light is on the opposite side of me so I'm always constantly fiddling around and shifting to keep light on my book. I also got tri-focals this year due to eyesight so I really need HELP in the keep my book lighted so I can actually read it department. I looked at the other Mighty Bright lights but they have such a large base I couldn't see how this would work with a 200 page mass market paperback.
The TravelFlex fulfills all my needs. It works great on my DTB's and, when clipped to my Kindle cover, works great on it as well. *** It does not work clipped to the Kindle itself only *** This is o.k. with me as I have a cover and I actually bought this for my DTB's and not my Kindle. It's just a side benefit it works for that as well! In fact I would go so far as to say that it works just as well as my e-Luminator 2 light that actually fits seamlessly into my Halsea for M-Edge Kindle Jacket (Fits 6" Display, 2nd Generation Kindle), Little Harbor--Coffee Brown jacket/cover for my Kindle (LOVE that cover!). It is not quite as focused of a brightness as the eluminator one but it does cover the whole Kindle screen. Pro's: This thing is very light Easy to pack and and take with you Uses an AAA battery VERY easy to position and throws light in a big enough arc that there is no glare for me Inexpensive and widely available on-line or on-ground Con's: It is very bright - you'll have to fiddle with this if you have a partner on the other side of the bed you don't want to wake up with bright light shining in his/her face - it doesn't have as narrow of a lighting area as some others I've used I recommend it very highly. This is an excellent value for your dollar.

Nook Baby,

First, to those having a blond moment, the Mighty Bright TravelFlex clips on the cover you put on your Kindle, Nook, Sony, whatever, not the ereader itself. Okay? Having got past that, it works great, very bright, lights up the whole screen uniformly. I was very pleasantly surprised. I tried the Sony PRS-600 along with Sony cover and light. The Sony Touch Screen, dismal to view, and the light not very bright. I switched to the Nook, yeah baby. The Lyra Light, very cute, was about 50% brighter than the Sony light, but still not all that great. I found myself trying to position the light closer to the screen so it would be bright enough, but then the screen farther from the light not bright enough, and then glare becomes an issue, and you're trying to find that spot where the head of the lamp isn't in your view, no glare and can see, frustration.
So, the bookstore, where I got the Nook, had the whole Mighty Bright line, cheaper than anywhere else, go figure. After reading many reviews, I bought both, the Mighty Bright Xtraflex2 and the Mighty Bright Travelflex. My understanding is that the Xtraflex2 is the brightest thing going, 2 LED's and 3 AAA batteries, but some say too bright and some say too heavy. So, I thought I would try the Travelflex first, 1 LED and 1 AAA battery. Hot Dog!!! The Travelflex is 3 times brighter than the Sony and about twice as bright as the Lyra, covers the whole screen without shoving the head of the lamp next to the screen. It is very light, very well made, and the switch works well. The Xtraflex2 is still sitting in the box. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. It must be like getting stopped by a cop car on a dark road. It doesn't strike me as very heavy. It comes with the batteries in the box. Maybe, I'll keep it in the car in case I get stopped by the police. I'll have my own light. Yeah? Whaddaya want? Just kidding, Officer, Sir. |
