When Folk Music Was Fun,
By Joel D. Berg (Harvard, Illinois United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mighty Day on Campus (Audio CD)
I recently saw the Kingston Trio in concert and couldn't believe the good time had by all. Listening to their classics and their new songs, I was reminded of all of the folk albums my parents played when I was a child. Without a doubt the best of those albums was "Mighty Day on Campus" by the Chad Mitchell Trio.I was only 7 or 8 when we first listened to this album on vinyl, and I almost wish the CD had the slightly scratchy sound that made the album so fun. Yet when I recently heard "Lizzi Borden" again for the first time in more than 10 years, I was taken back to my childhood. The song is hilarious, as is "Super Skier" and "Rum by Gum." The Chad Mitchell Trio represents a genre of American folk music that was laugh-out-loud fun, irreverent, and witty. The melodies are engaging and the songs are easy to sing along with. This, folks, is what good music is all about. If you loved the Kingston Trio, you'll love the Chad Mitchell Trio. Buy this CD and find out what you have been missing all these years!

the perfect introduction to the chad mitchell trio,

i'm another who's been listening to (and singing along with) this group for decades. and, even after countless hearings, i'm still amazed at the musicianship and the brilliance of the arrangements.
chad mitchell's voice is phenomenal--and i don't like tenors. but i could listen to him for hours at a time. the technique, the colors, the range--this is a performer to measure others against. the harmonies and counterpoint are fabulous. the arrangements are spectacular. the width, breadth and depth of musical knowledge and taste and style on this album (and their others) are apparently things of the past, but at least we have the group's recordings to remind us of a time when musicians AND their audiences actually knew something about real music, not just manipulative staging. i use this group, in particular this album, along with the tannahil weavers, to demonstrate that you really really do NOT need amplification for excitement. if i had a list of best 100 american albums, this would be on it, close to the top, along with ella's cole porter and bernstein's shostakovich 5th.

It's worth it just for "super skier" and "Lizzi Borden",
By Jon Bunnell (Florence, AL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mighty Day on Campus (Audio CD)
The songs "Lissie Borden" and "Super Skier" alone make the album worth buying but just about all of them are top notch. There are some really hopin' songs and also some mello ones but the lyrics in them keep you interested. One of the best things about these songs is that some of them are kind of like the musical equivilant of political cartoons. I can't think of any other kind of music like them which makes this album a very fun change of pace.

A great solo bango bit by Roger McGuinn - yes the guy from the Byrds,

As a life long McGuinn fan I just want other McGuinn junkies to know that this album contains a real gem. McGuinn was the instrumental accompanist for this album from his pre-hippie folks days (he's even on the cover in a buzz cut and suit) and he really tears it up in his banjo solo on "Whup Jamboree". Roger is soliciting suggestions through his web site for songs to record so I wrote and asked him to record a new version of "Whup Jamboree" for his ongoing folk archives, which he did, and you can now download it. Thanks Roger!

Timeless fun with music,

I loved this record when my Dad introduced it to me in the 60's--being rather politically minded and off beat-Chad Mitchell Trio songs were among the most popular at our family get togethers. Now my 15 year old daughter and her friends sing along in the car too. There aren't that many groups that appeal to such a cross-section of generations. Thanks fellas!

I bought this album maimly for "Lizzie Borden", but the whole album is great. Takes me back to the Hootenanny days and a lot of fond memories. Great stuff.

I love the Chad Mitchell Trio, and purchased this album in the 70's. When I saw it on CD, I immediately re-purchased it so I can enjoy it today, too. Back to the 'good ol' hootenanny days!!

I listened to this on a 33 album for years; now I don't want the hassle so bought in on a CD. This is an all-time favorite of mine I can now share with my grandchildren. My aunt's nickname was Nellie, so that was the song (Hang on the Bell, Nellie)that was played the most. When she passed away, I played "On My Journey" over and over for solice. "Lizzie Borden" is also a favorite, and I am sure a favorite of many others. You can't go wrong with this if you are a lover of good folk music that rocks with fun.

Just like I remember it from when I was at college...
Especially Super Skier. I was just learning to ski and had a friend on the ski patrol....

"Old times are not forgotten",

I was suprised, pleased really, to discover that the folk and fun songs that were so poplular during my earlier college days were no longer buried, unavailable and/or confined in a dust-covered box of old LP records somewhere in my attic. This CD album of early classics by the Chad Mitchell Trio, truly holds some of the fondest musical memories of that time period. 'Twas fun to sing along with them once again; "Super Skier," "Lizzie Borden," "Hang On the Bell, Nellie," and a classic even for today for those of us who remember what it was like, "Puttin' On the Style."
