These songs are lovely, full of soul and emotional intensity. Her voice in this album reflects the "Baptist Lining" tradition, where the singer lethargically delivers a song according to some inner sense and arhythmic meter. It reminds me of church. I never was fond of the song "A Mighty Fortress," but the others are really spiritual in quality. "Be Still, My Soul" (Finlandia) is gorgeous. "I'd Rather Have Jesus" tears at my heart. "It Is Well With My Soul" raises the roof off the house when Mahalia arrives at the final exultation of the lyrics. I feel that this CD captures Mahalia in a pensive mood. It is an interesting study of her character and talent. I love it. If you love her, you will too.

I bought this album back in 1998. All of the songs are wonderful, but my three favorites are "Be Still, My Soul," "The Chariot's Coming," and "All Is Well." On the song "Power In The Blood," it seemed as if Mahalia was close to doing a Holy Ghost dance...hahaha! Yes!

An excellent addition...

A nice hymn album by Mahalia Jackson in clear sound eventhough the musical arrangements could be made much better. If you have the old Lp you better exchange it with this cd.

I regret that there are no bonus tracks included.
