4.0 out of 5 stars More like 4 and a half stars actually, November 7, 1999
By A Customer
This is definitly an excellent soundtrack. I wouldn't rate it quite a five star one, but it's close. I didn't have any interest in watching the movie at first, and read a book in another room while others watched it. But I couldn't help but notice the music, especially since I wasn't watching anything to distract me. I immediately knew it was Horner just from hearing it. He definitely has his style! It's like some of his others at points, but is original for the most part. Especially since it has that "jungle" flavor to it, which is done really well. That's not always the case. The main theme is beautiful, and the windsong is very pretty as well, even though I wonder what the words are actually saying. To finish my story from earlier, after "listening" to the movie,I wanted to watch it, and much to my surprise liked it! I then immediately went out and bought the soundtrack, and have enjoyed it much since. Don't let the "kiddy" theme of the movie scare you away. This is a soundtrack worth getting!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Adventurous and then some !!!, April 4, 2003
By "myispnet" (Lowell, Ma United States) - See all my reviews
Unlike most, I watched the movie first, bought it on DVD. And from the moment I first heard the beat of the African drums and the Lebo-like voices, it was a winner. Especially at the end of the movie, when Joe was thought to have died...the score behind that scene, and the end title music (windsong) was incredible. I actually started crying my eyes out. I'm a male and thats hard for me to do ! For lack of a better term, I'm a sucker for scores such as this. I also loved the score of "The Lion King"...but, that one didn't make me cry as this one did. In my opinion, any score that makes me cry...is a winner....plain and simple.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Effort from Horner, May 4, 2000
It's interesting how some scores are actually better when heard out of the context of the films they compliment. I hadn't actually seen "Mighty Joe Young" when I picked up this album, but I was very impressed by the music. The lush orchestrations and thematic richness reminded me of Horner's early fantasy scores, and his use of the African choir was alternately rousing and heart-rending. Although I ultimately didn't find the film quite as compelling, Horner's music remains a very listenable, inspirational part of my soundtrack collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Mighty Composer
I'll make this blunt: this score is wonderful. Horner's use of the orchestra taps into something almost primitive. You can hear the instinct woven into these themes. Read more
