4.0 out of 5 stars More like 4 and a half stars actually
This is definitly an excellent soundtrack. I wouldn't rate it quite a five star one, but it's close. I didn't have any interest in watching the movie at first, and read a book in another room while others watched it. 3.0 out of 5 stars Average work by Horner
I only bought this CD for the lullabye song that was in the movie. That was the only thing I liked about it. I felt that some of the tracks were rehashed from other previous works he has made and it was nothing spectacular.

4.0 out of 5 stars More like 4 and a half stars actually, November 6, 1999

This is definitly an excellent soundtrack. I wouldn't rate it quite a five star one, but it's close. I didn't have any interest in watching the movie at first, and read a book in another room while others watched it. But I couldn't help but notice the music, especially since I wasn't watching anything to distract me. I immediately knew it was Horner just from hearing it. He definitely has his style! It's like some of his others at points, but is original for the most part. Especially since it has that "jungle" flavor to it, which is done really well. That's not always the case. The main theme is beautiful, and the windsong is very pretty as well, even though I wonder what the words are actually saying. To finish my story from earlier, after "listening" to the movie,I wanted to watch it, and much to my surprise liked it! I then immediately went out and bought the soundtrack, and have enjoyed it much since. Don't let the "kiddy" theme of the movie scare you away. This is a soundtrack worth getting!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Adventurous and then some !!!, April 4, 2003
This review is from: Mighty Joe Young: Original Score (Audio CD)
Unlike most, I watched the movie first, bought it on DVD. And from the moment I first heard the beat of the African drums and the Lebo-like voices, it was a winner. Especially at the end of the movie, when Joe was thought to have died...the score behind that scene, and the end title music (windsong) was incredible. I actually started crying my eyes out. I'm a male and thats hard for me to do ! For lack of a better term, I'm a sucker for scores such as this. I also loved the score of "The Lion King"...but, that one didn't make me cry as this one did. In my opinion, any score that makes me cry...is a winner....plain and simple.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Effort from Horner, May 4, 2000
This review is from: Mighty Joe Young: Original Score (Audio CD)
It's interesting how some scores are actually better when heard out of the context of the films they compliment. I hadn't actually seen "Mighty Joe Young" when I picked up this album, but I was very impressed by the music. The lush orchestrations and thematic richness reminded me of Horner's early fantasy scores, and his use of the African choir was alternately rousing and heart-rending. Although I ultimately didn't find the film quite as compelling, Horner's music remains a very listenable, inspirational part of my soundtrack collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Mighty Composer, January 16, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Mighty Joe Young: Original Score (Audio CD)
I'll make this blunt: this score is wonderful. Horner's use of the orchestra taps into something almost primitive. You can hear the instinct woven into these themes. It's simultaneously fierce and gentle. The orchestra bombards the listener with the nearly tangible leathery sounds of Eastern drums that are just pure bliss to hear on the right sound system, and the latter half of this score is so frenzied you almost need to sit down to appreciate it. The louder you listen to this the better. The aural impact of this Horner-fest is just unbelievable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A soundtrack as mighty as its movie lead!, July 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mighty Joe Young: Original Score (Audio CD)
Mighty joe young was a good movie with a lot of heart. the score is no exception! James Horner has done it again. He is at his best always. This score is a very moving and elustrious score that should have got a nomination. It takes to a wild jungle and the very heart of the bind between jill and joe. It takes you through their pain, joy, and bond. this one is a must for any film score listener. this score is one that you will play over and over because it is so grand.

As soon as I saw this film, I immediately ordered the CD. The opening sequence is wonderfully dramatic and embodies the drama of the film itself. "Windsong", the song that our heroine sings to Joe throughout the film, is captured here beautifully. For me, it's a captivating piece of work to add to Mr. Horner's already long list of great soundtracks - STII, Titanic and Jumanji to name a few.

5.0 out of 5 stars James Horner has a emotional ability beyond all, July 30, 1999

Who could ever forget the point where Jack dies in Titanic and the score starts up. Jack's death wasn't the tear maker. It was James Horners stirring piece. He picks pieces from all his films and reuses them. You hear bits of titanic, Legends of the fall, Casper. The man is a higher being
