It May Surprise You, October 12, 2010
This review is from: Mighty Leaf Tea Orchid Oolong, 1-Pound Bag (Grocery)
Of all the teas out there Oolong often goes overlooked, which is a shame because it possesses some unique qualities people need to know about. With that in mind, here are a few rarely-known facts regarding this unusual and extremely healthful tea:
First off, polyphenols, a chemical compound normally found in plants and, most especially, vegetables. Researchers have shown that these molecules reduce LDL cholesterol, raise HDL cholesterol, and stop the hardening of arteries to some degree. As Oolong is extremely rich in polyphenols, this point should be of interest to anyone concerned with heart disease.
The size of Oolong's molecules is also of particular interest to researchers. Falling in size between green tea's smaller molecules and black tea's much larger molecules, Oolong's molecules form a perfect match with hormone-sensitive lipase, an enzyme that dissolves body fat. This unique match, rarely found in tea, activates the enzyme and accelerates fat burning in the body.
Lastly, internal organ aging. Earlier this decade prominent Japanese researchers Masatoshi Nakano and Dr. Yasuhiro Mitomo produced evidence that a diet rich in Oolong tea can actually rejuvenate an individual's internal organs, lowering their respective age by as much as years. This is perhaps the most surprising discovery in regards to Oolong and its health benefits.
Speaking from the palette, I can't say that Oolong has the most appealing taste in the world (it took a year or so for me to even start liking it), but its benefits cannot be disputed. Try it for a while and see what happens. You might be surprised.
