Two mighty mule openers.
Ralph
Better gate openers are more expensive, but I wish I had the money I wasted on a MM to use towards the purchase of a one that would last.

This is a really convenient item when it works. Every time we have a lightening storm it blows out the wireless connection on the board. The hard wired openers still work but not the wireless. Their tech support is useless. You wait 30 minutes each time to reach them and they have no idea what is wrong. I am on my third board in one year. Each time it is the same conversation. I wait 30 minutes online and they tell me my receiver is broken. I replace the receiver and it still doesn't work. I call again and wait 30 more minutes online for them to tell me to send the board back to them to check it out. I never hear from them so I call again and wait 30 minutes online to reach someone who puts me on hold for 30 minutes to find the return only to tell me they are backed up for weeks. After I throw a fit they tell me the item can not be repaired and I need a new board. Three times in a year this has happened. I have asked the Tech department what I can do to help prevent this problem and they have never answered (which tells me they have no idea). During the winter when there were no thunder storms it was great but during the spring time and summer it is a head ache and now that the warranty is out it is going to be an expensive head ache. It is broken again (same issue) and it is now sitting on the ground beside my gate. I have sent an e-mail three times to their Tech department asking how much a replacement board is and I have not heard back yet. I am just about ready to rip everything out.

I ordered this item to replace another Mighty Mule gate opener that failed when it was struck by lightning.

This unit wants to jam on a regular basis when using the remote control. If you try to open the gate, then close it too quickly, it jams and you have to get out of your vehicle and manually reset the unit. I plan to call GTO and get the unit replaced or upgraded under the warranty.

Having said all that, I have nothing but praise for Amazon and the seller that sold me this unit. They did exactly what they promised when they promised.

Would I recommend another GTO gate opener? Sure; I probably got that one-in-a-thousand units that has a glitch or some other minor problem. Their units are much more competitively priced than other brands of gate openers and their written and video taped instructions easily walked me through the installation of my first-ever gate opener.

I installed the 350 two weeks ago and so far it's been nothing but trouble. After one week the gate stopped working, (seems like an issue with the remote/rf receiver.) I called customer service and after a 15 min wait I finally was talked through some troubleshooting techniques which have not really worked. I've now replaced the battery, (an additional 60 bucks,) and probably need to get a new remote. When I was at a local automotive accessory shop picking up my 2nd battery I happened to be in line with a guy who repairs automatic gates and when I told him about my problems he shook his head and said, "we always just suggest that people upgrade to the GTO models, Might Mule is the companies bottom of the barrel line."

On the plus side, when the gate opener works it makes life convenient.

Would not recommend this product to others.

The gate opener worked fine for 2 years and then the motor wore out. The manufacture, GTO, does not sell the motor as a part, They want you to replace the complete opener. The motor is nothing special, a frame 550 12volt motor which should cost about $5.00. If you need a gate opener to last more than 2 years, buy a comercial grade opener it will save you money in the long run.

Wow, were to begin. If you need a gate opener, find one other than a mighty mule. I have two gates into my property. I purchased two of the 350s. I put the first one up, but really never got around to putting the second one up, since i needed to do fence work fist. well, on the first one, I didnt store the batter in a marine battery case, and water go into the case. Well, corrosion or something traveled all the way up the wire and ruined the control board. You would think there would be something between the battery and the control board to prevent this. Well, blamed myself for this one. Installed the second one, purchased a marine battery box. Somehow, water got into this control board as well. Friend of mine has the 500 and the control board is seperate from the arm and can be replaced if a problem occurs. So, purchased the 500, I have had nothing but problems with it. Getting through to tech support is a nightmare. Be prepared to be on hold for 30 to 45 minutes each time you call. They had me send the control board in. Was returned with no note stating if they found anything wrong or not. Called back, Sent arm in. Arm came back with no note. Still didnt work. Called back (another on hold wait) Sent control board back. Waited a month. Called back again. Control board lost. Sent me new control board. Gate works now, but now another problem is occuring. It will not hold closing position. ie, you set the gate to close to a certain position, usually, where it hits the gate stop and then applys a small amount of force to hold it closed. it will hold that position for a week or so, then gradually, it will start not closing all the way. Right now, it is about 3 inches from closed. Enough room for my dogs to squeeze it open and slide through.Read more ›
