The Mighty Oak and Me is inspired by a real 300 year old oak tree in novelist K. S. Brooks' back yard. The tree constantly revealed new wildlife and wonders with its age and size. Neighborhood children were in awe of this "Mighty Oak," and when they would come by, Brooks would help them discover the magic of that tree and the value of all trees. With a lifetime of writing and photography experience, and a passion for teaching and the environment, K. S. Brooks celebrates the Mighty Oak and its lessons in The Mighty Oak and Me.
"This is truly a primer on trees, especially the oak, our national tree. The book is full of lively discussion about the parts of a tree, its propagation, the animals that inhabit it, and seasonal changes." --Baltimore's Child Magazine
"In the vein of Shel Silverstein's "Giving Tree," [this book]captures the beauty of a tree...while presenting questions that will inspire children..." --Kristina Henry, Author of "Sam: The Tale of a Chesapeake Bay Rockfish"
K.S. Brooks has been writing for over thirty years. She penned her first book, a swashbuckling action-adventure based in 17th century France, when she was fifteen years old. Since then, despite working for a living in the electronics industry, Ms. Brooks continued to write. In 2001, she left the high-tech arena in Boston for the Eastern Shore of Maryland to pursue her writing.
That same year, her first novel, Lust for Danger, was published. That action-adventure novel won Ms. Brooks Honorable Mention in the Jada Book of the Year Awards, and invitations to speak at the Maryland Writers' Association Writers' Conference, the Bay to Ocean Writers' Conference, and numerous other venues. She has been honored by the Maryland Writers' Association three times by participating as a judge in its annual novel contest.
As the business world and health issues took up more of her energy, Ms. Brooks set her sights on moving West to an environment more suitable and affordable to a writing career. Since her relocation to the wilderness of northeastern Washington State, late in 2008, Ms. Brooks has completed the following works which have been published by Cambridge Books: the suspenseful romance, The Kiss of Night (2010), Night Undone (2011) and three children's books: The Mighty Oak and Me (2009), Postcards from Mr. Pish (2010), and Mr. Pish's Woodland Adventure (2011). She has six more novels planned in the original Agent Night Adventure Series, two in the Agent Night 'Cover Me' series, a horror novel, and a number of Mr. Pish children's books in the works.
In addition to her writing, Ms. Brooks is an award-winning photographer and poet. Her articles, photographs, poetry, and blogs can be found in books, magazines, newspapers, galleries, and web sites worldwide. She currently writes three different blogs, and is a guest blogger for a number of web sites including CeliacChicks.com and Celiac-Disease.com.

A wonderfully written childrens book.....I read The Mighty Oak and Me to my classroom, 3rd graders. They enjoyed the beautiful pictures, interesting information and thought about how their actions could prolong life in general. The students initiated and participated in conversations about the trees and animals surrounding their homes. They learned about and developed a true appreciation for nature. I would suggest this book for children of all ages.

This is a very enjoyable book about a tree and the amazing things it provides for the residents of its neighborhood. Written in a conversational style and illustrated with lovely photographs by the author, the text poses questions that encourage readers (or listeners, for younger children) to think for themselves and make connections with prior knowledge. As a parent, I would have loved to have this book for my kids when they were younger. As an educator, I think this book is a valuable resource to remind kids that our environment is shared with many other life forms, and that humans are just one of the inhabitants of this planet.

This is a terrific book. It is a fun and easy read and perfect for anyone hoping to get a child in their life to read. It's a great book to read together too. It (perfectly) lacks all of the things that often frighten off new readers- it's not too long, each page is easy to read, and it quickly draws you in and keep you interested.
I highly recommend it. Me and my 9 year old loved it. Now my 13 and 11 year old are lined up to read it to know what we're talking about.
