Mighty Oak is a Mighty Book!,
By
This review is from: The Mighty Oak and Me (Paperback)
A wonderfully written childrens book.....I read The Mighty Oak and Me to my classroom, 3rd graders. They enjoyed the beautiful pictures, interesting information and thought about how their actions could prolong life in general. The students initiated and participated in conversations about the trees and animals surrounding their homes. They learned about and developed a true appreciation for nature. I would suggest this book for children of all ages.

This is a very enjoyable book about a tree and the amazing things it provides for the residents of its neighborhood. Written in a conversational style and illustrated with lovely photographs by the author, the text poses questions that encourage readers (or listeners, for younger children) to think for themselves and make connections with prior knowledge. As a parent, I would have loved to have this book for my kids when they were younger. As an educator, I think this book is a valuable resource to remind kids that our environment is shared with many other life forms, and that humans are just one of the inhabitants of this planet.

Great book to help spark the young reader bug!,
By Brian Bradbury (Lowell, MA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Mighty Oak and Me (Paperback)
This is a terrific book. It is a fun and easy read and perfect for anyone hoping to get a child in their life to read. It's a great book to read together too. It (perfectly) lacks all of the things that often frighten off new readers- it's not too long, each page is easy to read, and it quickly draws you in and keep you interested.I highly recommend it. Me and my 9 year old loved it. Now my 13 and 11 year old are lined up to read it to know what we're talking about.

This review is from: The Mighty Oak and Me (Paperback)
"The Mighty Oak and Me" is the insightful interactive portrait of a wonderful, centuries old, giant oak tree. People say "stop and smell the roses," but this book does so much more than that. It shows the reader how to really look at and appreciate any tree and its special place on our beautiful earth. Children and adults alike who read this book will be awakened to and delighted by natural treasures such as this magnificent old giant.

Compelling and fun.,
This review is from: The Mighty Oak and Me (Paperback)
Please see my review of Postcards from Mr. Pish. I don't want to repeat myself. Long story short, I am an educator and a parent. This is an extremely fun and interesting book. I liked 'Postcards' very much. It is a tough act to follow. Brooks pulls it off, though. More great pictures. More fun facts. I really like that this one is focused on one thing...the oak tree. It is a great companion piece to 'Postcards' - wide lens versus narrow lens if you will. Guaranteed you will learn a lot, and kids definitely will get into this book. I have worked with enough kids to know that they are very discerning readers if we let them be. Do your child/nephew/cousin/neighbor a favor and buy this book. Joe Café

Living with and not conquering nature,
By
This review is from: The Mighty Oak and Me (Paperback)
I'm a Lakota (called sioux) Indian, one of the indigenous Red Nations of Turtle Island (called North America). We cherish all life. Life is WAKAN (sacred/holy).We call trees "Tall Brothers," and love to hear the wind-songs they sing, and to see them bend and sway as they dance to the tempo of the winds that pass their way. K.S. Brooks may have been born of a European bloodline transplanted to Turtle Island, but I have come to know that her heart beats the same as mine with respect to the profound resonance with GreatFather and EarthMother (called nature) that drives our destiny on Earth. The Mighty Oak and Me is a touching and loving story from her heart. While not as enigmatic as Silverstein's The Giving Tree, it is equally approachable, and profound, if you let the deeper messages come into your heart. Walk in beauty, peace and strength, Toksa ake, Newt, le miye lo.

I loved the way this book was written, the questions really make it fun to read outloud to your kids, what a fun interactive way to bring some nature into a childrens book. Makes me wish for a cool old oak tree in my yard!

A Very Good Book,
This review is from: The Mighty Oak and Me (Paperback)
Children would be amazed at just how much life is in and around one very old oak tree. It is a world in itself. This book is very successful at teaching kids about the microcosm of life. I would compare it to Dr. Seuss's "Horton Hears a Who."
