Biography

Formed in 1994 in Montreal, Quebec, the Smashers’s infectious pop infused melodies, rippin’ horn licks and killer live shows, quickly established them as the city’s “Kings of Ska”. They released their first album (“Self-Titled”) on Planet Smasher’s founder Matt Collyer’s own label STOMP Records and hit the road. By 1997 they were no longer a local band, but a national phenomenon, headlining shows… Read more in Amazon's Planet Smashers Store

5.0 out of 5 stars The most SMASHING album by the Smashers themselves!, August 10, 2005

Perhaps the pinnacle of their music writing and ingenuity can be found on this album. The vocals are immaculate. The drums are very up-beat and envigorating. And the incredible difference in maturity and style is shown by their strangely "funked" tunes. Hard to explain, but it is quite unique. Many of their songs are not entirely ska, but ska-based with intriguing use of short horn blasts that create odd sounds which are very satisfying to listen to. They make use of silly lyrics, which can be hilarious or just plain strange at times, but you can't go wrong. They really hit every note with verbosity and clarity. You can easily understand everything being said, which is a rarity in ska.

The tempos are not quite as quick as most ska fans are into, however it is more enjoyable than just hitting notes away as fast as possible. This album is an experience in itself and definitely a must-get! Kudos to The Planet Smashers on this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best ska album of the past 5 years, April 3, 2005

Bright horns and keys and constant guitar upbeat, the music just makes you want to bop around. The lyrics are sometimes serious, but usually fun, and always delivered in that smiling, god-I-love-doing-this style of Matt Collyer. All the songs are incredibly catchy, but check out the excellent title track, "Explosive" featuring Neville Staple, the Police-ish "Direction", the downtempo singalong "Can't Stop Now", and the really, really heartfelt "Recollect". I was never the biggest Planet Smashers fan, but this album is by far the best ska album in the past 5 years, and renewed my interest in ska, which had died down since the mid-90s.
