Great little HDTV receiver for the Mac.,
This review is from: Miglia Tvmini HD Digital Tv Re (Personal Computers)
Actually it took me quite a while to find this little gem on the internet. My Google and Amazon searches weren't turning up HDTV receivers for the Mac. I did stumble on eyeTV products in an Amazon search but I was confused about the analog versus digital capabilities. There was also the matter of 'will it work with my MacMini G4'. After extensive review of the eyeTV site, It appeared that the Miglia TVmini HDTV was what I was looking for. I must admit I was still unsure if the G4 was good enough to exercise all its capabilities. Well I bought it anyway. It took me 15 minutes to set it up and I was receiving HDTV on 9 channels. Wow, that was easy. And the recording capabilities worked just fine. Here's a useful site: http://www.antennaweb.org/
This site tells you what digital TV stations are in your area and how strong the signal is. For my area it said a simple omni directional antenna would work for most of the stations, not all. They were right on target. The little antenna that comes free with the Miglia TVmini HDTV works pretty good. I get a few drop outs on several of the stations just as predicted, but most of them come in just fine. Still, I'm looking to get a better antenna. I just got to get that extra channel. The Philips PHDTV3 looks like a good choice. I'll have to try it and see. Good job Miglia!

works great, no analog though,
This review is from: Miglia Tvmini HD Digital Tv Re (Personal Computers)
It works! The antenna isnt junk either, I am getting almost all the digital stations from chicago 25 miles from sears tower with it inside my house sitting on my desk. I also get many digital channels that happen to be on the comcast analog cable in my area (chicagoland). Problem is that all the analog stations on my comcast cable are untuneable, so I cant watch those on my mac. Its not supposed to be a cable tuning box, just digital stuff, so its fine, I just thought it did that as well.
next thing to do is get a bigger/better antenna mounted outside and cancel cable (as I only watch a couple stations anyways). eyetv - works. cytv with it - works great! make sure you go and donate to that opensource project.

Unit Software is Highly Unstable,

I've owned this product for several months now and I did one unit software upgrade to ver 2.4.1. The software crashes quite frequently upon initialization. I had to contact support directly and I was told that this is a known problem and that I should roll back to ver 2.3.1 for better software stability. Sad to say, the older version is not much better.
The Miglia website is totally useless, and if you try and locate software updates via the support link, you will be going in circles and not getting the information you are seeking. When I did get to speak to support about returning a defective unit(which they took care of in a timely manor), I told them about the issue back around August 1, and almost a month later, nothing has been done. This is a sad reflection on how much they care about the customer and I really doubt they are doing anything to improve their support website and/or the stability of their unit software for the Tvmini HD. Save yourself some grief and stay away from this product!!! This is purely an issue with Miglia/Elgato and not Amazon. I have bought other items from Amazon and have had complete satisfaction.

Works well with digital cable,

I am very pleased with how well it worked with unencrypted QAM cable systems. The picture quality was far superior than analog tuners that are similar in price. I would advice getting this over analog tuners, even SD channels are better in digital.

Miglia TV Mini HD,
This review is from: Miglia Tvmini HD Digital Tv Re (Personal Computers)
So far this has been a great product. I use it almost every night and enjoy watching it even more than my regular non HD TV. In my area of Connecticut I get about 25 stations but not all of them HD. The HD ones I get are excellent and the image is beautiful. The only thing is I don't completly know how to use the Titan TV set-up on the website. What you have to do is watch each channel and figure out which channel is which because they do not follow where they might be on a standard HD tv set up from your provider. I love editing a TV show, knocking out the Commercials in I MOVIE HD and burning them to I DVD! Whats all so great is using the Miglia box to record then pause the frame and take a screen dump ( Apple shift 4) Then print the shots, I did this with the Superbowl and my collegues thought I was actually there! You will love this product, but make sure you use it on a fast Mac and have a decent amount of ram. ( Good Luck you'll love this box).

If you have a high resolution Mac, why let it sit unused when you can use it as a TV; HDTV at that?!?
I use my laptop 17" MacPro for many uses and now it is used as my primary TV when I get in from work. Initially, I used the antennae that came with the TvMini HD, but found that I could not find a couple of the local HD stations. I decided to buy an amplified antennae, only to discover that it was not any better. Then I decided to attach it to my basic cable service. Using the clear channel option, I found all the local stations were broadcasting over it in HD. I took the antennae back and have not looked back. The quality of the picture on my Mac rivals anything I have seen on HDTV's at the stores.

TV for the mac, ready for prime time?,

The Miglia TV Mini HD works as advertised! However, if you live in an over the air market like my area you won't always get all the channels broadcasting HD due to weather or transmitter interferance. That's why it would be nice to have a manual tune dialog box so that you could input the frequency to see if you could trap the HD signal for a missing channel (s). There may be one floating around the software, but have not yet located it and I have looked. The other feature missing, though it was there the first time I trapped channels, is a way to trap the analog over the air channels. Overall I have pleased with the product.

This product rocked my socks off. I read the reviews and the theories, but thought you needed a large external antenna to get good reception. I live in the suburbs of San Antonio and can pick up 20+ digital stations - including many HD stations - right out of the box with the included antenna! I was amazed that you can get such clarity from over-the-air transmissions. Clearly the cable companies are keeping this quiet - because I canceled my cable today after using this product. I mostly watch The Office, My Name is Earl, Heroes, and Grey's Anatomy. Now I can DVR them in HD right to my Apple TV (which is on order) or iPod automatically without a cable subscription - and the quality is OUTSTANDING. In my area I can't pick up PBS - but can get everything else.
Also, I plugged it into my cable jack and it recognized all of my digital cable stations (over 300 in total), but many I don't watch and really only had cable for the HDTV. All I need now is an HDTV tuner for my TV and I'm all set. HIGHLY recommend this product.

This is a very good product and it does everything that it says it will do. My only complaint is that it drops a frame or 2 during the recording and I find that somewhat annoying during playback. I don't normally watch TV on my computer so I found it much more enjoyable after buying a large monitor. I have no opinion on using that the atenna provided.

It gives a good quality picture on my Mac. The indoor portable TV antenna that came in the package didn't pull in the signals, being I only live 25 miles from the TV Stations, so I had to hook it up to an outdoor UHF antenna. Also
I can only draw in my loacal TV Stations and am not able to use it to see DirecTV Satellite Television HD Channels. I may check with DirecTV to see if I can receive their channels. It is also priced to high for what it can do. In all it does give me a HD Television experience on my Mac. |
