Very technical book, but quite comprehensive. I found it useful for delineating a variety of migraines people in my family have. He has some tricks to help that I haven't heard before but the book is kind of old, so most of the treatment is not up to date with medications.

I heard Oliver Sacks being interviewed on National Public Radio and began to research his work. I suffer from migraine auras without getting the headache. If you have them, you know they are extremely bizarre and can be very scary. This book helped me to understand the physiology behind the auras and also contained one paragraph where Dr. Sacks said that in the thousands of patients he had seen, there was only one patient who ever suffered permanent damage following an aura. This is something that has concerned me for over twenty years because I lose a great deal of my vision during an aura and it lasts for about 30 minutes. I've always worried that at some point my vision might not fully return.

The book is easy to read and Dr. Sacks really knows what he talking about because he has migraines with aura himself. He is a fascinating man who unfortunately has not been well lately. I believe he was diagnosed with cancer in one of his eyes. I was so thankful for this book, I actually wrote him a letter and included a drawing of what my aura looks like (they are surprisingly similar from person to person). Although I did not receive a personal response, I received a letter back from Dr. Sack's assistant saying she had shared my letter and drawing and thanking me and wishing me well. If you have migraines and would like to understand them better, I recommend this book. PS - magnesium supplementation has cut my migraine auras down to only 2 or 3 per year, sometimes less. Experiment with different formulations until you find one that works for you. A final note - a recent article in the Wall Street Journal said doctors are finally starting to understand that migraines may be more related to electrical/seizure activity than blood flow issues as had been previously thought. The research continues and we are getting better treatments all the time.

Still Reading. But learning much more about migraines. This has helped me to spot a few more triggers and to understand how my body functions before during and especially AFTER the migraine (sometimes the after affects of a migraine last longer then the migraine itself).

Are migraines curable? Mine are gone. And during the time when they were at their worst, this book by Oliver Sacks was my salvation, my companion, and my way of coping. Information about the symptoms of migraine was invaluable to me; aspects of my health that had baffled, frightened and defeated me were explained here in ways that I could comprehend. Migraines left me, apparently forever, several years ago, and I'm convinced that this book was instrumental in that. The more I read, the more I understood, the easier it was for me to deal with the problem. Oliver Sacks is a healer, and this book was a healing experience for me. Highly recommended. I recommend for all migraine sufferers that they explore this. And of course, the book is beautifully written as are all Oliver Sacks' books. His contribution to health care and health study in our time is immense -- beyond calculation. --- In response to other reviews posted here, let me suggest that there are many things migraine sufferers can do which might help them. To say simply that migraine is incurable, that it's genetic -- that perhaps invites a pessimism about the problem which does not serve the people experiencing this pain. This is a great book.
