Biofeedback is based on an old relaxation technique called autogenic training, that I have found helpful together with other things (excercise, diet) for my migraines. I thought this book would give me additional helpful hints on how to get more in control of my migraines. Unfortunately that was not the case. The text for the biofeedback is not specific for migraines, it is a general text. What you do get is a bunch of stretching excercises for your neck, shoulders and jaw which you would be better of learning from a physiotherapist. And by the way muscle tension doesn't cause migraines, it is in some people vice versa so I guess those chapters are not a complete waste. I'm also very suspicious of any one method that claims it can cure migraines by itself, I don't believe in wonder drugs, holistic or otherwise.
If you buy this book, you will also have to buy two CDs from the author's website, which gets mentioned frequently. Alternatively you can tape the text of the CDs yourself, assuming you still own a tape recorder. Also, you will need a skin thermometer feedback unit. All in all an additional $65. The book is advertised as all you need to heal your migraines, but that is not true. I found her method tedious and her tone often preachy, like you just have to think positive and things will be better. If I am in pain, I am in pain, and it won't go away by thinking "I remember to breathe and relax even when my body feels uncomfortable". If you can use the word "uncomfortable" in the context of migraines you have not understood what migraines are like, the sentence should be "I remember to breathe and relax even when my body is in excruciating pain". As for the imagery, it was counterproductive for me. I really don't want to imagine any part of my body bathed in blood. I'm not squeamish, but I see the image before me and want to throw up. This is not for me, I'm going to try to find a real person to teach me.

not only migraines,

This review is from: Migraines Be Gone: 7 Simple Steps to Eliminating Your Migraines Forever (Perfect Paperback)
I bought this book a year ago thinking to reduce the number and severity of my migraines which had increased to two or three a week after repeated doses of Maxalt and NSAID medications began triggering rebound headaches. My plan was interrupted by several surgery proceedures that were made more stressful by the presence of migrains and left me with persistent anxiety and difficulty sleeping. During my convalecence, I started doing the exercises in Kelsie's book and found immediate relief from the more intense anxiety and gradually, the migraines have come under control.
I find the techniques to be very sound - a valuable compliment to other mindfulness-based therapies.

Skeptic Proved Wrong,
This review is from: Migraines Be Gone: 7 Simple Steps to Eliminating Your Migraines Forever (Perfect Paperback)
Four months after beginning the Migraines Be Gone program my migraines declined from 4 - 5 moderate to incapacitating migraines PER WEEK to less then 4 mild migraines PER MONTH. To say I was a skeptic of the process is to put it mildly. However, at my wife's insistence I began the Migraines Be Gone program. To my surprise, I saw immediate improvement in both the severity and frequency of my migraines. Learning how to diffuse the stress I did not realize I had was a tremendous help and I think the key to my improvement. As an added bonus, my wife, who suffered from my erratic mood swings associated with my migraines, says I'm a much nicer person now! Migraines Be Gone works! I highly recommend Migraines Be Gone for all migraine sufferers!

Valuable stuff in this book,

This is the first migraine book I've bought, even though I've had the damn things since fourth grade ... and I'm 55 now. In fact, been getting more in the last couple of years, since I work hours every day in front of a computer in a stressful job. This book appealed to me because it spoke to many of the symptoms I have ... jaw clenching, neck clenching, other things I thought contributed to headaches but doctors never talked about or took seriously. The author recommends stretches that work as part of a comprehensive program that attacks migraines in many ways, including some relaxation techniques that work for me ... without taking more and different pills. I've also bought a couple of the CDs that are part of the program and like them. I looked a few other books on migraines and they seemed useless to me. Everybody's migraines are different, but this book gives you positive and effective things to try, and the author has had tons of experience dealing with migraine suffers. It shows. This stuff in book helps me.

Must Read For Migraine Sufferers!,

This review is from: Migraines Be Gone: 7 Simple Steps to Eliminating Your Migraines Forever (Perfect Paperback)
I am 53 years old and have suffered from migraines and tension headaches since I was a child. I had a headache all the time, sometimes with what I call a regular people headache and often with ones requiring hours of lying quietly in a dark room hoping to die. I would sometimes take so much medication in desperation that I ended up making myself even sicker. I was finally written up at work for too many absences and faced disciplinary action. Fortunately, the next week I heard about Kelsie's work and purchased this book. The book explains what happens during a headache and then takes the reader through a step-by-step program to eliminate those headaches. Using Kelsie's techniques, I was able, almost immediately, to decrease the frequency and severity of my headaches, and I have been making steady progress towards eliminating them altogether. I am now able to go for days without a headache, and when I get one it is most often alleviated with one dose of an over-the-counter pain reliever. This is an absolute miracle for me. I have been lucky enough to work with Kelsie one-on-one, but if you don't live in the Denver Metro area, her book is a must have. It is a valuable reference for me, and I know it will be for you as well.

Empowering and Healing,

Buy this book if you are currently suffering from headaches. It's a wonderful, practical step-by-step resource for those suffering from migraines and other kinds of headaches, and it's the only headache book I've seen that actually teaches migraineurs what they can do about the problem. You really have nothing to lose except the pain!
You have to be serious about following the steps because each one builds on the others but it gets easier as the days go by. The part I liked best were the progress and reporting charts that monitor individual progress that made keeping track of small changes easier. The photographs are very helpful as they helped me understand how to do the specific exercises. Besides the program, there are other little hints like "trigger foods" and affirmations to take away that will help. I am now virtually headache free.

I have suffered from crippling cervico-genic migraines for over twenty years. Ms. Kenefick's book was a primary instrument in leading me to eliminating my migraines and I highly recommend Migraines Be Gone to anyone who either suffers from migraines or has a loved one who suffers from migraines.

Kelsie Kenefick's book should be encouraging to all headache sufferers. She guides the reader through the what, why and how of releasing yourself from pain, with biofeedback techniques that anyone can learn. The book can be read in less than an hour, but it becomes a workbook and reference to be consulted when needed. I highly recommend the book, as well as Ms. Kenefick's workshops.
