Book Description

March 1, 2011 4 - 7 years880L (What's this?)
Anna is the child of Mennonites from Mexico, who have come north to harvest fruit and vegetables. Sometimes she feels like a bird, flying north in the spring and south in the fall, sometimes like a jackrabbit in an abandoned burrow, since her family occupies an empty farmhouse near the fields, sometimes like a kitten, as she shares a bed with her sisters . . . But above all Anna wonders what it would be like to be a tree rooted deeply in the earth, watching the seasons come and go, instead of being like a "feather in the wind."

5.0 out of 5 stars A Migrant's Tale... With a Twist May 10, 2011
Format:Hardcover
Some days Anna feels like a goose. With her family, she heads north in the spring, and south again in the fall. She feels like a jackrabbit, living in someone else's borrow. Hers is a family of bees -going from plant to plant all day long. At night, she is a kitten, cuddled close to her sisters. When she goes to the store, she is just shy: trying to catch that mumble of foreign words. Anna wonders what it would be like to be a tree - rooted to one place, letting the seasons change while she remains.

Anna belongs to a family a migrant workers. But with fair skin, strawberry hair, and German accents, these are not the migrant workers most people normally think of. As we find out in the author's note, they are Mennonites who split their hard, humble lives between Mexico and Canada.

This richly illustrated picture book represents a lyrical and unconventional look at migrant workers. While some young children might struggle with the comparisons, overall this would be a great book to read in class or as a homeschool project. MIGRANT combines literature with social studies in a wonderful, thought-provoking way.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rutgers University Project on Economics and Children February 18, 2011
Format:Hardcover
As the youngest member of her large family, Anna has little choice but to follow along every spring when her family travels from their home in Mexico to Canada in search of farm work. As migrant workers, Anna's parents and siblings faces insecure employment and poor working conditions, and the empty farmhouses that they rent are often expensive and do not feel very inviting. Anna is too young to work and she cannot go to school, so she spends much of her time daydreaming and thinking about what it would be like to have roots sunk deeply into just one place.

Lyrical prose and creative illustrations speak to the imaginations of young children, communicating some of the hardships and disappointments that Anna and her family experience. A detailed author's note speaks to the wisdom of parents and teachers, helping them to further teach young learners about the rights of migrant workers to decent working and living conditions. Separating this work from other children's books about migration and work is the focus on Mexico's Mennonite community and the issues faced by some of its members in Canada and Mexico.
