1.0 out of 5 stars Spots
I can understand the applause for this set, which I purchased as a gift. However, when I examined the plates, I noticed that 6/8 of them had spots on the upper surface, of varying obviousness. In one case, a small gouge was present. There is simply no excuse for this lack of quality control, which had previously been reported for the Italian pattern from the same...

5.0 out of 5 stars none better!, August 4, 2008
This review is from: Mikasa Antique White 45-Piece Dinnerware Set, Service for 8 (Kitchen)
I know I drove my new husband nuts when we registered. I changed my mind about a million times, and researched everything on our registry. I was the worst when it came to choosing China. I looked first at various beautifully painted patterns, only to realize that they weren't dishwasher or microwave safe. And most of the White patterns were so dainty my husband wouldn't even pick them up in the stores, so I was terrified to have them around him and children, since we have 4 neices and 2 nephews under the age of 8. My solution came in this china.

The pattern is elegantly simple so it will never be dated and even though it's thin and light (yes, it's translucent, you can see light through it, but good china is supposed to be) it is a comfortable fit for everyone who uses it, from my 6'6" husband to our 2 year old neice.

This China is also microwave safe, dishwasher safe, oven safe and chip resistant. I've found this to hold true because my husband always overloads the sinks and dishwasher, and tends not to care where he puts things. My Mikasa china is holding up beautifully. My teacups have been used to bake souffles, freeze parfaits and all of the dishes have been repeatedly microwaved. Yes THIS CHINA IS OVEN, FREEZER, DISHWASHER, MICROWAVE ETC. PROOF! My only advise is wipe the cups before they go in the dishwasher.

If you like drinking the milk out of your cereal bowl, I would suggest either purchasing additional cereal bowls or purchasing the smaller set and definitely purchasing additional platters and vegetable bowls. This set comes with rimmed soup bowls and they are not good to sip out of.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Elegant China, January 8, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mikasa Antique White 45-Piece Dinnerware Set, Service for 8 (Kitchen)
I narrowed it down to the Antique White and the French Countryside. Both are very similar in pattern and was having a very difficult time choosing one. I had almost gone with the French Countryside because I liked the option of square plates, which I didn't see for the Antique White, and I liked the French Countryside pattern just a tad more.

But in the end, I chose the Antique White for 2 reasons. 1) I wanted true white dinnerware and the French Countryside was more a linen/cream color. 2) Antique White is china; the French Countryside is stoneware. All my dishes are currently stoneware (20+ years) and although I like them because they stand up to everyday use, I really had my heart set on good China, something a bit more elegant and lighter weight but still able to withstand everyday use.

I've only had the set for about a month and it took a little getting used to using something that looks so delicate and elegant as everyday-ware. Even my husband said food looks better on the white. We use it just like our other stoneware and so far so good! The set was packaged very well. I also purchased the cereal bowls and we love them! Another good thing about this pattern is that if an item ever does break (I've been known to be a bit clumsy sometimes), replacements won't be hard to find (at least for now) since it's one of Mikasa's most popular patterns. I am so happy that I decided on the Antique White!!

UPDATE (2+ Years Later):

So it's been over 2 years using this set and all the pieces are as beautiful as the day I got them. They always get washed by the dishwasher so they've held up. I also purchased the pasta bowls but they are stoneware and not fine China. The only problem I've had was a little chip on one of the pasta bowl. But the original set is still immaculate and I still love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality and quantity for the price, February 5, 2008

The Mikasa Antique White set is made of fine china instead of the more fragile stoneware of the Mikasa French Countryside set, available for the same price. The pattern is the same, so do not confuse them (Amazon.com has switched the descriptions for these two dinnerware sets).

Mikasa makes Antique White dinnerware out of its "Ultima +" brand of fine china (supposedly very strong), and describes it as oven, freezer, dishwasher and microwave safe.

I have just received the Antique White 45 piece set (8 place settings with teacups and a serving set) well packed and intact, and will update this review should it not perform up to expectations.

Note: I recently saw the same set at the same price in my local Macy's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific product--great value, too!, February 24, 2009
This review is from: Mikasa Antique White 45-Piece Dinnerware Set, Service for 8 (Kitchen)
I recently had to obtain new dinnerware; I wanted something all white. After purchasing a stoneware set from Pfaltzgraff and watching it get completely scratched up after 1 week's use, I returned it all. A bridal consultant at Macy's suggested china instead of stoneware for durability reasons (including the four children who load and unload our dishwasher). We were intrigued with Mikasa's Antique White pattern but thought that it was out of our price range until we discovered it at Amazon. We <love> our new plates and bowls and have begun collecting other serving pieces. It's lighter than stoneware, and makes even tacos seem more elegant. The pieces have already been clanked together soundly without a crack, scratch, or chip. We are very happy with this purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful dishes, January 6, 2009

This review is from: Mikasa Antique White 45-Piece Dinnerware Set, Service for 8 (Kitchen)
I would consider the Mikasa Antique White china elegantly casual dinnerware. This dinnerware has a high glaze and is beautiful. Being antique white, I can change my color scheme with different table cloths or accent pieces for a more formal or casual look. I like that I can heat the dishes in the oven without worrying about them breaking.

To complete the set, I added bread and butter plates and dessert bowls. Over all, I'm very happy with my purchase. The only down side I found was when I unpacked the dinnerware, each and every piece had a sticker on it that had to be removed. A little Goof-Off got rid of the tape residue nicely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely China, April 5, 2009

I originally ordered what I thought was a teacup and saucer in this pattern to "preview" it. I mistakenly bought a breakfast cup and saucer which is a very large version of a teacup and saucer. Imagine my surprise when a gigantic teacup and saucer arrived at my door! Luckily my daughter realized what I'd done and ordered a true teacup and saucer which was of course normal teacup and saucer size. I was so relieved! I thought I'd picked out giant china or something. :) If you have BIG coffee drinkers or serve lots of hot cereal at breakfast, the breakfast cup and saucer would be useful.

This china arrived quickly, in great packaging, and met every expectation I had in ordering it. The quality of it is excellent. Simple and elegant on the table, and versatile with a change of linens or fresh flowers. I couldn't be more pleased.

If your family are cereal eaters, order the cereal bowls. The bowls that come with this set are very pretty, but they are soup bowls, not very deep. I also purchased the smaller dessert bowls and the coffee cups. The teacups that come with the set are wonderful, a great size for serving coffee too, but the coffee cups are tall and very lovely.

A huge plus to this set is the wide variety of complimentary pieces the manufacturer offers. Of course fine china cleans up so very easily, which is a definite plus. I plan to add to this china over time and it's nice to know Mikasa has had it around a good few years. I can't say a single negative thing about this product. I'm very pleased in every way with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comparison Sold Me!, March 29, 2009

This review is from: Mikasa Antique White 45-Piece Dinnerware Set, Service for 8 (Kitchen)
My decision for new tableware had been narrowed to Mikasa French Countryside or Antique White. I REALLY thought I wanted the French Countryside although some of the reviews had planted seeds of doubt! On a mission last summer, I went to a local department store to look. Both place settings were out and I still leaned toward the French Countryside. As I was about the leave, the sales clerk put both dinner plates side by side and to my amazement, there was NO DOUBT in my mind! Antique White it is! How funny--the French Countryside plate looked like what you would find stacked up at a cafeteria hot from the dishwasher!!! The china set the standard I was looking for and it has stood up beautifully under everyday use. The set was poorly packaged by Amazon (my heart sank when I saw that box), but beautifully packaged by Mikasa! All the boxes were fun to open as it was a birthday gift to me! I ordered the salt and pepper shakers and large footed bowl to complete my table and it is awesome! I hope to enjoy this set for many years to come--it is just delightful to use! Thanks Amazon for the great price and hats off to Mikasa for a quality product!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love these dishes, April 8, 2010

This review is from: Mikasa Antique White 45-Piece Dinnerware Set, Service for 8 (Kitchen)
I was looking for something to replace the stoneware dishes that I purchased about 6 years ago. The dinner plates on my old stoneware cracked and chipped so easily that I was down to 5 from 12 orignal plates. I wanted something to last a lifetime without worrying about having to replace them in a few years. After much research, I decided on the Mikasa Antique White pattern. My only concern was that the style would be too "colonial" for my taste. I ordered them after only seeing a few pieces at a local Macy's store. I ordered the 45 piece set from Mikasa because they had 20% off one item and free shipping. I ordered extra pieces from Amazon because they had the best price. When the dishes arrived, I was pleasantly surprised. They are beautiful and are a classic, timeless design that fits into any decor. They wash beautifully, stack easily in my cabinets and I couldn't be more pleased with how they look and feel.

Received as expected, but in fewer days than originally estimated. The set was well packaged and protected. I really love that these are not only microwave and dishwasher safe, but good for freezer and oven as well! This is really nice quality, without having to be coddled like older fine china.

I agree that having to take the sticker off of each and every piece was a time-consuming bummer, but I'm sure the manufacturer has some reason for it. It would be nicer if they put the numbers on in dishwasher removable ink so this wouldn't be an issue.

I also wish that there were more options for set sizes and pieces at similar price reductions to the service for eight. I will likely be getting some of the smaller bowls and accessories because they will be more useful than the formal, large soup bowls that came in the set. Didn't need the sugar, creamer and the vegetable bowl, but it was less costly to buy the set with them than to buy open stock. Amazon's price beat local stores by about 15% and there was no shipping at the time I ordered. Such a deal!
