Cool but "cheap" for Mikasa,
By ccc (Anchorage, AK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mikasa Cheers Stemless Balloon Glasses, Set of 4 (Kitchen)
I have Mikasa wine glasses (very heavy, nicely made) and purchased these as a gift for a friend who likes stemless. When they arrived I checked them out before I wrapped them. While they look cool, and are great for not getting your glasses mixed up if you have guests, they are light & cheap feeling. Not at all what I expected from Mikasa or for the money, maybe from Walmart at a cheaper price.

Both the balloon goblet and white wine style of these glasses with stems are great, high quality items. The detail is deep and consistent. Guests frequently comment favorably on them since they are so distinctive
We had a visitor who broke several of the stemmed glasses so I ordered replacements and also a box of the stemless balloon goblets and two of the stemless white wine goblets, which looked more modern and less breakable for the next time our clumsy guest visits. The stemless versions look and feel cheap. The weight of each of the four glasses in the set varies considerably. The detail is not deep and is inconsistent like they had waited too long to replace the grinding tools. The detail is barely ground into the glass and there are actual gaps in the one with the stripes. In contrast the detail on the stemmed version is deep and looks great. One glass looked like they overheated the rim during manufacturing and it slumped inward. There are bubbles in the glass and one had a scrape mark on the side. These things would not be acceptable as seconds and I had paid full price (well, Amazon full price). I checked the bottom of the glasses and that told the story. The good quality stemmed glasses are made in Slovakia. The stemless versions are from China and look like Mikasa took the low bidder and never did quality checks. I'm really disappointed because I like the stem version so much. All together I have purchased seven boxes and all had consistently high quality. If you go for the stemmed version watch for the 4 for 3 promotion. That will give you twelve glasses plus four free spares for when your aunt comes to visit.

I know some of the other reviews stated they felt the quality was lacking on these. I think they are beautiful and well. The weight of them is actually heavier that the stemless glasses that I bought at a "party" for another well known manufacturer of glassware & tableware. The patterns are very cute. The price here was the lowest I found anywhere online. They retail at $59.00 I think.
