This one will keep you guessing,
By
This review is from: Mike, Mike & Me (Red Dress Ink Novels) (Paperback)
Beau is a stay at home mom of three rambunctious boys. She and the love of her life, Mike, have settled down in the `burbs, and life has become a bit monotonous. Lately, she's been thinking about the other Mike she loved, especially when out of the blue, he sends her an e-mail. Suddenly she's wondering what might have been had she chosen him. Despite her friend's warnings and protestations, she arranges to meet Mike in Florida while visiting her in-laws, where he confesses that he's never gotten over her.Beau meets the first Mike while at summer camp. They spend each summer together, and now that they have graduated, she assumes that they will take the next step - living together or getting married. But Mike thinks it is all too sudden, and is not sure he wants to take a job in New York or California, where he has an opportunity to work on something called the world wide web ("is that like USA for Africa?"). Enter the other Mike. whom she meets in an airport bar and feels an instant rapport. He gives her his business card, and she thinks that she has tossed it out. Then she finds it and starts seeing him platonically, though he's more interested in a relationship, and she doubts the first Mike's commitment to the relationship since he wants to remain in California. Each chapter is identified as past or present (1989 versus 2004), and chock full of so many pop culture references to the 80's that late boomers will get a kick out of the trip down memory lane. The past and present flow so well together. As Beau bounces from anecdotes and stories about each Mike, the reader is just not sure which Mike she ended up with. Just when you think you know that it is one Mike, you reconsider and believe it is the other Mike, and then back again. "Mike, Mike & Me" is a cleverly written and entertaining novel that will keep you guessing.

Fabulous tale,
This review is from: Mike, Mike & Me (Red Dress Ink Novels) (Paperback)
In 1989, high school student Barbra "Beau" is dating Mike when she meets a new Mike. The two Mikes in her life are as different as any pair of people could be, but she likes both of them. After a difficult time making up her mind Beau finally picks one Mike and marries him, leaving the other Mike behind.Fifteen years later, Beau and Mike remain married raising three kids and living in Westchester County, New York. When the rejected Mike contacts Beau, her dissatisfaction with being a suburban mom surfaces. She begins to dream of returning to the big city, doing something besides being a mom and wondering if she married the wrong Mike. This fabulous tale rotates between the present and the past with the lead female protagonist considering which Mike is right for her in each time period. The story line uses 1989 teen cultural icons and other references to anchor that era, but does so within the context of the subplot. Wendy Markham also keeps readers guessing on which Mike became the spouse with that twist turning the story into a one sitting tale that in ways reminds the audience of hypocrisy of The Importance of Being Earnest. I wasn't sure if I would like it and I ended up loving this book. It keeps you going up until the last page. I couldn't wait to finish it to figure out which Mike she ends up with. There are barely any hints throughout the book, so it really ends up being a surprise (at least to me). Seriously one of the best chick lit books I've read in a long time!

What if?,
This review is from: Mike, Mike & Me (Red Dress Ink Novels) (Paperback)
What if the one that got away came back into your life? What would you do? We often think about the one that got away and the choices we've made about dating. This book answered these questions for Beau. It was a really good book. I was able to guess which Mike she picked (only by luck; nothing that the author gave away). It's a easy, fun read. Good way to spend a lazy Saturday afternoon.

Cute Diversion,
By Wendy Kaplan (Houston) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mike, Mike & Me (Red Dress Ink Novels) (Paperback)
The plot for "Mike, Mike and Me" is different and amusing, at least for the first hundred pages or so: Beau, married mother of three and wife of a man named Mike, gets an e-mail from the man she jilted 15 years ago for her husband--and that man too is named Mike.Through a clever melding of Then and Now, we follow Beau, who is a self-described spoiled brat but very loveable anyway, through the 80s in Manhattan as she parties, works, and dates her long-time boyfriend, Mike. A crisis arises when long-time boyfriend wants to move to California to a brand new place called "Silicon Valley" to work on something worlwide web-ish, and Beau doesn't want to move. So which Mike did she marry? Her beloved long-time lover who makes the ultimate sacrifice for her? Or the dimpled, gorgeous would-be TV actor who has stolen her heart as well? The treat of the book is that we do not know until almost the last page. The NON-treat of the book is that, after a while, the endless back and forth between the two Mikes and Beau's inability, then and now, to make up her mind gets repetitive and tiresome. But nonetheless, this is still a fun afternoon's read.

I admit that I have been avidly reading chick lit books for the past year. It's my vice. :) This book has been one of the best reads. While other books have lulls in them, this book kept me reading and guessing. Not only was I trying to guess which Mike she picked, I was smiling...there are so many moments I could picture myself in.It's meant to be a fun book to read - and it delivers. It's meant to be a book that keeps you guessing - it does. I was entertained the entire book and read it within a couple days.

Yes Mike, but which one?,

I really enjoyed this book. The premise is simple chick lit, a woman early forties examines her life and the choices she made over the years. The twist is that the reader doesn't know until the last few pages who she chose to marry.Beau was in love with two men, her college sweet heart and a man she met later in an airport lounge, both of whom are coincidentally named Mike. We know that Beau is now married to Mike and has children with Mike and a beautiful house in New Jersey with Mike. But is it the Mike she knew inside and out and wanted to spend her life with or Mike who swept her off her feet and refused to put her down? Alternating chapters from the 1980's to present day 'MIKE, MIKE & ME' keeps the reader on their toes. I could not put this book down until the mystery of the Mike's was solved. Also the 80's pop culture references were hilarious! I could recommend this book for that reason alone, but luckily there are a million other reasons to pick up this book by Markham. Happy reading!

This is one of my favorite books. I have read it several times and to this day I still laugh. Wendy Markham's writing is clever and fun. I recommend the Slightly Single series too!

I read this book over the holidays for some light reading and found it very enjoyable. For chick-lit it had some great twists and turns which left me guessing to the end. Each time I thought I figured out which Mike she had picked there was another twist and it left me guessing to the end.I would recommend this book if you want a light read and something to make you think about your own past relationships.

Which Mike did she choose?,
By
This review is from: Mike, Mike & Me (Red Dress Ink Novels) (Paperback)
This book is split into two parts:First part: 1989 Beau (Barbra) lives in NYC and has a pretty good life. She works for former soap star and has a long term (and distance) romance with Mike, but then while waiting for him she meets another Mike. She does not want to do anything with this new Mike but boyfriend Mike wants to move out west. She begins to see both of them till events force her to pick one of them. Second Part: 12 years later Beau and Mike have three children and live in the suburbs and Beau is getting a little tired of the desperate housewife/mommy business she has going on. Then one day while going threw her e-mail she finds a letter from the other Mike and they start talking on line. The other Mike now lives in Florida. Husband Mike realizes Beau needs a break so he gets tickets to send Beau and the kids to Florida to visit his parents. Beau meets up with Mike and relizes she likes what she has. The book is interesting, but the most interesting part it trying to figure out which Mike Beau ends up with because the author does not tell the reader untill the end. |
