3.0 out of 5 stars Very Brief...Not Comprehensive, October 25, 2002
By
A. Kulcsar "akulcsar" (Ypsilanti, MI United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Mike Meyers' Network+ Certification Passport (Paperback)
This was my first venture into the Passport series. The book is quite readable and provides what amounts to a whirlwind tour of most of the objectives of the exam. For vetarans in the field, the book will provide a pretty good refresher, should fill most gaps, and should give you confidence in your own knowledge to pass the exam.

This book most certainly is not for the new tech treading in unfamiliar waters. The book does not treat any area in great detail, and in fact misses more than a half-dozen of the objectives on which the Network+ exam tests. In particular, the book mentions little if anything on the following:
802.2 (LLC)
AppleTalk
POP3/IMAP4
RARP
NTP
VLANs
SOHO Networks (particularly troubleshooting DSL and Cable)
The book itself admits that it is Microsoft-centric because the Network+ exam is that way, but you will get burned by the non-Microsoft questions if you have no other experience or reference. If you are new to the field and are looking to this book as your only resource, it certainly will fool you in thinking you will be prepared to be successful on the Network+ exam. The questions offered in the text are considerably simpler than those you will see on the real exam. The questions offered on the CD are a little closer but still too simple. I strongly suggest additional material (a comprehensive study guide from your favorite publisher, as they are all very good anymore) and a stronger exam prep simulator (...).

The book does the best it can in fewer than 400 pages, but unless you are a network veteran you will need more support to pass the exam.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Refresher for the Experienced Network Professional, August 18, 2002
By
Kye (Carlsbad, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mike Meyers' Network+ Certification Passport (Paperback)
All books of the Passport series are geared tword the experienced user who needs a refresher book just before a test. That said, I do not recommend this book for beginners or those that have little production experience with networks.

Things I liked about this book

1) Helped me pass the exam with flying colors!!!
2) Short concise chapters that can be read in about an hour.
3) Important facts organized in easy to read tables
4) Tips about what is and isn't required knowledge for the test
5) End of chapter questions

Things I did not like about the book

1) Travel theme adds nothing to the readability of the book
2) Some important networking configuration issues are glossed over. Apple, Unix, and Netware only mentioned in passing.
3) practic questions in the book and on the provided practic test program are too easy compared to the question you will recieve on the exam.
4) Some spelling errors and other errors.

Agian, this book is not for the beginner but for those who have spent at least 12 months as a network technician. Additionally, you will want to search for some better practice questions than what is provided with the book; just do a search for "Comptia free exams" at your favorite search engine. Be sure to find questions for the N02 exam and not the older version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Meyers once again delivers quality certification material., March 19, 2002
This review is from: Mike Meyers' Network+ Certification Passport (Paperback)
CompTia has revised the Network+ exam to try and stay up with the latest in network and networking technology. In looking at the exam this book is the final piece to the certification puzzle.

Understanding that this book should be used to concentrate on the major points or objectives, it makes the perfect companion to the All-In-One Study guide.

In 384 pages Meyers' once again shows why he is one of the most respected names in the certification arena today.

From a great breakdown of the OSI model to network hardware and media to topologies, standards and protocols, Meyers lays out a track to certification success.

Making sure that you can understand the concepts there is review questions at the end of each chapter as well as exam tips and tricks throughout the book.

Finally there is a cd included with practice exam software from ExamWeb which gives you the opportunity to practice before going live. Overall this is a great add-on study tool and should make the final preparation easier.
