Editorial Reviews

Recorded in 1979 at the Wembley Conference Centre as part of the exposed tour this DVD contains the full gig. For this tour a 50 piece ensemble orchestra were used and with a road crew of 25 requiring 3 articulated trucks to transport the shows hardware it was indeed a spectacular show. Newly re-mastered and digitally enhanced the audio on the release is of the highest quality and there is multi angle viewing options allowing the viewer a unique insight into the time when Oldfield was at the peak of his musical and visual abilities serving up spectacular show after spectacular show. The full track list of the gig is as follows:1. Incantations Pt.12. Incantations Pt.23. Tubular Bells Pt.14. Guilty5. Tubular Bells Pt.26. EncoreFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: MUSIC DVD/CONCERTS UPC: 094633803794 Manufacturer No: E92E-38037

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Oldfield Concert, January 2, 2006
This review is from: Mike Oldfield: Exposed (DVD)
I've had this live recording in my record collection for over twenty years, but I never dreamed I'd see it on dvd. The live version of "Incantations" has always been far superior to the studio version (I usually prefer studio recordings), and the magnificent Maddy Prior delivers a haunting vocal of Longfellow's "Song of Hiawatha."

Add to this a second dvd with a fine live version of "Tubular Bells," and you can't go wrong.

Very well filmed for a late 70s production. A bit pricey at 35 bucks, but well worth it for any fan of Mike's music.

Here's hoping they'll release the "Tubular Bells II, Live From Edinburgh Castle" dvd for U.S. coding. I've never understood why Mike doesn't respect his U.S. fans by making his dvd releases coded for all areas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny, September 3, 2006
This review is from: Mike Oldfield: Exposed (DVD)
Absolutely amazing and, yes, worth the price.

I've owned "Exposed," the album, since it was originally released, but this is the first time I've ever actually seen the concert (more accurately, one of the concerts... this was a tour). The quality is quite amazing considering the age, and the performances are terrific, especially Maddy Prior and Pierre Moerlen. The sound quality is excellent and doesn't appear to be "sweetened" for release, excepting perhaps the final applause after each extended piece. That being said, I was a bit taken aback by how disinterested the audience initially seemed. The "hand clap" section of "Incantations" always sounded like a madly attentive group of people on audio, but with the house lights up, they look like a group of tourists who wondered in from the rain. They wake up during "Tubular Bells" and are nearly frenetic at the end. The musicians are obviously having a lot of fun, with Maddy running out into the audience during "The Sailor's Hornpipe," looking like she's having the time of her life. It is quite apparent just how much money Mike spent on this touring extravaganza - he lost nearly every dime he made from "Tubular Bells" financing this tour. A very full rock band, a symphony orchestra and eleven(!) backup singers... Their playing is brilliant. Mike sometimes looks completely unnerved by the attention he receives, and it's obvious he's not comfortable at all in front of a large audience. This was, after all, very soon after his "transformation" from shy, withdrawn hippy to natty, clean-cut pseudo pop-star.

I can't believe how much I enjoyed this. Every fan of Mike Oldfield needs to own this, especially those who have enjoyed his music since the early years.
