Classic Oldfield Concert,
By Lee LaFarge "Zontar" (West Virginia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mike Oldfield: Exposed (DVD)
I've had this live recording in my record collection for over twenty years, but I never dreamed I'd see it on dvd. The live version of "Incantations" has always been far superior to the studio version (I usually prefer studio recordings), and the magnificent Maddy Prior delivers a haunting vocal of Longfellow's "Song of Hiawatha."
Add to this a second dvd with a fine live version of "Tubular Bells," and you can't go wrong. Very well filmed for a late 70s production. A bit pricey at 35 bucks, but well worth it for any fan of Mike's music. Here's hoping they'll release the "Tubular Bells II, Live From Edinburgh Castle" dvd for U.S. coding. I've never understood why Mike doesn't respect his U.S. fans by making his dvd releases coded for all areas.

Worth Every Penny,
This review is from: Mike Oldfield: Exposed (DVD)
Absolutely amazing and, yes, worth the price.
I've owned "Exposed," the album, since it was originally released, but this is the first time I've ever actually seen the concert (more accurately, one of the concerts... this was a tour). The quality is quite amazing considering the age, and the performances are terrific, especially Maddy Prior and Pierre Moerlen. The sound quality is excellent and doesn't appear to be "sweetened" for release, excepting perhaps the final applause after each extended piece. That being said, I was a bit taken aback by how disinterested the audience initially seemed. The "hand clap" section of "Incantations" always sounded like a madly attentive group of people on audio, but with the house lights up, they look like a group of tourists who wondered in from the rain. They wake up during "Tubular Bells" and are nearly frenetic at the end. The musicians are obviously having a lot of fun, with Maddy running out into the audience during "The Sailor's Hornpipe," looking like she's having the time of her life. It is quite apparent just how much money Mike spent on this touring extravaganza - he lost nearly every dime he made from "Tubular Bells" financing this tour. A very full rock band, a symphony orchestra and eleven(!) backup singers... Their playing is brilliant. Mike sometimes looks completely unnerved by the attention he receives, and it's obvious he's not comfortable at all in front of a large audience. This was, after all, very soon after his "transformation" from shy, withdrawn hippy to natty, clean-cut pseudo pop-star. I can't believe how much I enjoyed this. Every fan of Mike Oldfield needs to own this, especially those who have enjoyed his music since the early years.

My only regret as Oldfield fan since 1971 is I did not get to trip out to, I mean see... this video when I was 19. Wow this is a great DVD. I always thought that he could only do this kind of creation in a recording studio and here it is "Incantations" right on stage with all the "bells" and fine touches. I'm more than happy I bought this DVD

I didn't know this was available until recently. What a treat! I caught this tour when Mike came to the States, at the Tower Theatre in Upper Darby, PA. A great venue for the show, and what a show it was. If you're reading these reviews then you must already be a fan, so why are you still debating? Buy this DVD already. If you saw this tour it will bring it all flooding back. If you didn't get a chance to see one of these performances, here's the perfect opportunity to see a group of incredible musicians perform fantastic music with passion and flair. A faithful recording of an incredible body of music. I have for years said that Exposed would be the album I'd choose if I could only listen to one CD for the rest of my life, and now I have the DVD! I'd give this 6 stars if I could.

A Great Find,

A must-have for any fan of Mike Oldfield, Maddy Prior, and/or Gong. I was unaware there was a concert film of the Exposed tour, so when it showed up while I was browsing, I hit Add to Cart instinctively. I was not disappointed. The film quality is about what you'd expect for that time (1979), but it's clear and clean. The editing in the first disc ("Incantations") is a little questionable (focusing on people who aren't doing much while someone off-screen is taking a solo, etc.), but the set includes alternate-angle viewing, and the footage of Pierre and Benoit Moerlen charging through the vibraphone solos in Part IV is terrific. But what is with all those paper airplanes?

Two disc set with disc 1 having no audio. The video was typical late 70s quality, not bad for it's age. Disc 2 played fine with same video quality as disc 1, had audio.
