Not his best,
By LA in Dallas (Dallas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mike (Kindle Edition)
Like most highly prolific authors, Wodehouse's work is uneven, and this is definitely not his best. It's one of his earliest novels, and really should be attempted only by the avid Wodehouse fan who has practically memorized all his later works. Those will detect a faint flavor of what will eventually become the Wodehouse style. And in Mike, a pleasant but not overly brainy youth who gets into scrapes, and Psmith, a clever plotter who helps get him out, you will see hints of Bertie Wooster and Jeeves. One other thing I should mention: cricket is at the heart of this book. If, like me, you are unfamiliar with the game, you'll have to wade through pages that are more technical and less comprehensible than a treatise on quantum field theory.
This free Kindle edition is bare bones: the table of contents is unlinked, and although there are captions for illustrations here and there, the illustrations themselves are absent. Also, most pages have an awkward line break or two in the middle of a paragraph. You get what you pay for -- these things didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story. |
