1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money or the time, August 10, 2003

This review is from: Mike Tyson Heavyweight Boxing (Video Game)
I like many who bought this game am a boxing fan. With EA Sports pulling it's sucessfull simulation "Knockout Kings" off the ps2 platform, I was left to look elsewhere for "sweet science"(boxing) action. After months of looking and finding just old boxing games or cartoonish boxing games I thought I was out of luck. Then came "Mike Tyson Heavyweight Boxing". I had always liked Mike Tyson and remembered playing "Mike Tyson's punchout" for the Nintendo Entertainment System so I decided to buy.

When I got the game home I was very excited because the graphics looked very solid. However the Gameplay is another story. When I had my first fight I was appauled at how little strategy it took to fight. It was usually just stand in the middle of the ring and hit buttons to knock over your opponent. However, if you do get knocked over forhget about getting up because in some scenarios you have to hit three buttons at once. Three buttons in ten seconds! Get Realistic!

Secondly, with every fight you have you earn money to improve your boxer. While this is realistic it causes a problem because a person could just get knocked out many times and builld up to be a great fighter without winning one fight. Once again kind of a cheap thing to do.

The create a fighter mode gives many options except every face they offer looks like Tysons. Oh and when you get done creating yourself, you have the option to acctually spar(fight) with Tyson in training. If you can spar with Tyson in training why would you want to work to get to fight him in career mode. Kind of defeats the purpose.

The sound is one of the brighter aspects of this game. When fighting you will hear your corner or the audience giving you advice even though this advice is not very good or useful. This game has announcers but they only speak between rounds or after the fight when showing highlights. The referee will appear at the beeginning of the round and then dissapear. Once again NOT REALISTIC!

Overall, this game looks like it was rushed out onto the shelves to fast. The developers at Codemasters should've thought weather they wanted to make this title an Arcade game or a realistic simulation. There were no answers to that before buying this game and after buying this game I must say I'm still confused. All I can say is that the Codemasters just relied on the Mike Tyson name alone to sell this game and it might work once but it won't work again. The codemaster slogan, "genius at play" doesn't work for this game because their is nothing too genius about this game and if Mike Tyson expects to get out of bankruptcy by the sales of this game well he better hope he gets a rematch with Lewis because this game doesn't solve his problems it just causes more of them.

1.0 out of 5 stars To balance out questionable reviews, June 20, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Mike Tyson Heavyweight Boxing (Video Game)
Be very careful when reading the glowing reviews posted on this game that are posted here. I have heard that the actual people behind lame games go on and post great reviews to fool people into thinking the game is a winner and spike sales. My suggestion is to check out the online unbiased sites such as IGN.Com and Gamespot.Com where reviews can be trusted. So far I have seen very bad reviews from the legit sites on this game with most saying the animation is very jerky and the controls rough..so the reviews posted here leave me very suspicious. I purchased the 1st game for the PS1 and it was horrible, so this one I will wait to see what legitimate reviewers say. The fact the same company came out with both games makes me nervous since the 1st was such garbage.

June 27 update
Here is an update. IGN.Com just gave the game the worst review. Here is the punchline:

"Mike Tyson Heavyweight Boxing
Codemasters unleashes one of the worst boxing games in recorded history."

1.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS A TRUE HALF STAR GAME!!, July 3, 2002

this game [is] bad. i bought this game with some doubt in my mind. i should have listened to all of the bad reviews it recieved. i read maybe 3 review that gave the game less than a 3 outta 10...

the gameplay: i thought that the game didn't use the power that the PS2 could put out. the fighters looked as if they were just punching accross the other fighter. plus the worst feature was when you got KO'd you had to hit the triangle, square, circle and the x in a certain order to get back up and if you didn't then you were out. i also thought the game should have had some more reputable names, hell i would be happier if TYSON was on the KO kings from now on...

my words of advice: don't look at, don't buy, don't rent, and don't borrow from your friends

yours truly,
trooperdeex
