Book Description

August 24, 2002
During the 1950s, the Soviet Union produced and used around 9,000 MiG-17s. First flown in January 1950, it is an extensively upgraded MiG-15 with a redesigned scimitar wing and lengthened fuselage, and known to NATO as "Fresco". The type was built under various designations including the Polish Lim-5P and Lim-6bis and the Czech S-105, and served not only with the Soviet armed forces but with the military in other Warsaw Pact nations, and further afield including Afghanistan, Cuba, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Morocco, North Korea, North Vietnam, and Syria. The Chinese built the MiG-17 as the Shenyang F-4. The type saw combat in the Middle East against Israel, in North Vietnam, and in Nigeria during the Biafran War. As the later MiG-19 (which will be covered in a forthcoming Aerofax volume) was introduced, the MiG-17 was relegated mostly to the ground-attack role, replacing the MiG-15.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE book on the MiG-17, October 21, 2010
By
This review is from: Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17: The Soviet Union's Jet Fighter of the Fifties (Aerofax) (Paperback)
Yefim Gordon has become the expert on Soviet Aviation - his ability to review/translate orginal Soviet material is key to the depth his books bring to the table. The MiG 17 was a refinement of the infamous MiG-15 which gained fame during the Korean War. Production began in 1952 and the plane saw a lot of action during Vietnam, Arab-Israeli Wars and a lot of other hot-spots. Western pilots came to respect this agile and rugged fighter jet

This book is very technically oriented, Gordon covers the development and each and every varient of the MiG-17. Statistics, data, charts, dates, facts, figures, line drawings, many B&W photos, 8 pages of color photos and 10 pages of color drawings show this plane in every aspect. About the only criticism I could say is that the photos are small, but that means there are more of them.

This paperbound book has high glossy paper and is one of a series that Yefim Gordon has written about Soviet aviation. I have purchased just about every one of them and they are excellent additions to the library. Highly recommended for serious aviation buffs, those who want to learn more about Soviet aircraft design and modelers.
