Book Description

November 11, 2008 8 and up 770L (What's this?)
Milagros de le Torre hasn’t had an easy life: ever since her father sailed away with pirates she’s been teased at school and there’s the constant struggle for her family to make ends meet. Still, Milagros loves her small island in the Caribbean, and she finds comfort in those who recognize her special gifts. But everything changes when marauders destroy Milagros’s island and with it, most of the inhabitants. Milagros manages to escape in a rowboat where she drifts out to sea with no direction, save for the mysterious manta rays that guide her to land. In stunning prose,Meg Medina creates a fantastical world in which a young girl uncovers the true meaning of family, the significance of identity, and, most important, the power of a mother’s love.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. Grade 4–8—The very first page hints at the loss of Milagros de la Torre's wonderful childhood home, Las Brisas, an island in the Caribbean. The child loses the tastes, smells, sounds, and warmth of the loving community as she barely escapes from the harsh and deadly attack of neighbors from a different island, jealous of the bounty found there. Magical realism is a constant element in the unfolding events as the 12-year-old ends up on another island—this one off the coast of Maine. The contrast between the two cultures and communities is stark, but, gradually, Milagros finds herself building connections with the couple who have taken her in, and fighting the jealousy of their daughter. A parallel story of her mother enduring slavery on a pirate ship reminds readers of the enduring commitment in the mother-child relationship even though Milagros has no awareness of those events. A friendship with Old Woman Pérez, a Mexican immigrant, builds a bridge to the warmth and color of the Latin culture that Milagros needs. The book is written in accessible, but lively and lyrical language; it is obvious that great care has been taken to choose every word. Despite the resulting often-deliberate pace, this is an engaging and compelling tale of a fish out of water, learning to accept the realities of life through the magic of her heart.—Carol A. Edwards, Denver Public Library

Review

Praise for Milagros: Girl From Away:

"The book is written in accessible, but lively and lyrical language; it is obvious that great care has been taken to choose every word...this is an engaging and compelling tale of a fish out of water, learning to accept the realities of life through the magic of her heart."--School Library Journal, starred review

“Medina’s use of magical realism keeps readers tantalizingly off-balance as she navigates among settings. Her language, too, is as changeable as the sea, sometimes lulling readers with gentle alliteration and flowing metaphor, other times jolting them with menacing foreshadowing and sharp dialogue. Milagros is a survivor, and though her strange, haunting tale ends on a hopeful note, a melancholic echo of all that she endured will remain with readers”--The Horn Book Magazine

"Give this to readers who are looking for something original, something wishful, and something strange, in a good way."--The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

"Readers will eagerly embrace spirited Milagros, who recognizes both the magic in the everyday world and the limitations of those who are terminally realistic."--Booklist

"Milagros's tale is readable and entertaining..."--VOYA

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality for Kids Too November 19, 2008
Format:Hardcover
In "Milagros," younger readers get the same mix of great characters and page turning plot that adults expect. The character of Milagros is very relatable as an introspective young girl and a trickster. She anchors this adventure which is written in beautiful detail. It's the kind of story that expands the imagination and slips in lessons about dealing with loss, and understanding what's really important in life. With this book, author Meg Medina, has hit a homerun her first time at the plate. My nieces will get a present for Christmas that I know they'll like.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Story with Flowing Prose December 29, 2008
Format:Hardcover
I have mixed feeling about this book. On one side, I was completely blown away by the story itself but on the other, the ending was just..weird and there were parts the dragged by. For instance, for the first part of the story, there's all this build-up and excitement and then something semi-big happens and then...nothing. Then, there's more build-up and excitement about what's going to happen and then you have the weird ending. It's not icky weird or anything but it left me going "Um, okay?"

But other than that, I really enjoyed it. Milagros was an interesting character to read about and I loved her adventurous style. The prose itself was nearly poetic, making this a flowing read, and the plot was intriguing.

So despite the ending, I'm going to recommend this one. I look forward to any upcoming novels from this author.
