VOL 1: Miles' raw genius,
By
This review is from: Miles Davis: Volume 1 (Audio CD)
for people who have a spark of curiosity about the legendary music of Miles Davis, knowing where to begin the search can be a frustrating issue. with a back catalogue as vast as a small continent, figuring out where to start and where to go can be tricky. especially considering the many phases of Miles' long and adventerous career. he spawned many folowers and imitators and made many enemies along the way. a larger than life figure who would dominate the jazz scene for decades and whose music still holds power and brilliance even to this day. Personally, i have been such a big John Coltrane fan for so many years, that i somehow blindly overlooked Miles Davis' recorded output for a long time. it's just been in the past 4 years or so that i have gotten the opportunity to dig into Miles' absolutely stunning and quite frankly, overwhelming music. whereas Coltrane was the master of melody, Miles is the master of the mood. a true genius whose musical impact and influence is felt even stronger today than it was when he was alive.
Vol. 1 is a collection of some of his early Blue Note recording sessions and they show Miles and band in fine fine form. that great steady bebop sound is prevelant and the dexterity of these players is something to behold. even though there were a lot of performers who were playing this style of jazz back in the day, few could play up to this calibur. a note about my cd: i'm not sure if its because my copy is a japanese version of this album, but my tracklisting differs greatly from the one shown here on amazon. my disc plays as follows: 01. Tempus Fugit 02. Kelo 03. Enigma 04. Ray's Idea 05. How Deep Is The Ocean 06. C.T.A. - alternate master 07. Dear Old Stockholm 08. Chance It 09. Yesterdays 10. Donna - alternate master 11. C.T.A. 12. Would'n You - alternate master 'Tempus Fugit' 'How Deep Is The Ocean' 'Yesterdays' & 'C.T.A.' are the standout cuts for me. but every cut shines with a raw young talent. recommended as a pretty good place to start your Miles Davis search to see where his head was at during the early formative years of his playing.
