Format: Audio CD
~ The Concord Music Group, home to some of the great jazz labels, including Prestige, Contemporary, Riverside, Milestone, Fantasy and Pablo, has introduced a new "The Very Best Of" series in which they offer a single-disc samplers of the music of five of the most influential jazz musicians of all time.
~ "The Very Best of the Miles Davis Quintet" presents ten tracks from the first famous version of the quintet featuring Davis (trumpet), John Coltrane (tenor saxophone), Red Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums). At the time of these recordings, this was "THE" jazz quintet - the top jazz band in the world. These ten tracks represent the end of Davis' run at Prestige Records and overlap with the quintets first recordings for the Columbia label. The tracks on this compilation range from hard bop to lushly romantic ballads with highlights including two songs from the pen of Sonny Rollins ("Oleo" and "Airegin"), two Thelonious Monk compositions ("'Round Midnight" and "Well, You Needn't"), and single tunes written by Duke Ellington ("Just Squeeze Me") and Dave Brubeck ("In Your Own Sweet Way"). There are also standards (Rodgers and Hart's "My Funny Valentine") and Davis originals ("Four" and "Tune Up"). All of the music features the unique sound of what may be the most famous quintet in the history of jazz. A highly recommended survey of the one of the many phases of the long, constantly evolving career of Miles Davis.
