This is a beautiful (and large--approximately 12" X 12" book) look at the artwork of Miles Davis. Davis began sketching and then painting in earnest as another outlet for his creativity. The book covers the (approximately) ten years before his death when his artwork grew to a more mature style and a near obsession to keep his restless mind active. Also included are a number of quotes (in paragraph form) by Davis on his art.
"It's like therapy for me, and keeps my mind occupied with something positive when I'm not playing music." Miles Davis.
In Davis' work you'll see long, flowing abstract shapes incorporating the female form, his own very organic approach to portraiture, a more straight-lined approach to the human form (Davis' "robots"), a Kadinsky-like style, forms reminiscent of Picasso, bold geometric shapes and lines, and eventually, an incorporation of burlap, nails, rope, and other materials into his paintings. And all through his work Davis' use of bright, bold colors with an African tribal influence or heavy geometric shapes can be seen.
Throughout this book you can see Davis' style mature from his sensual female forms, more robotic forms, and into a more geometric abstract style. And all with his use of bold lines and colors. Davis' earlier work is lighter in form and is in juxtaposition to his heavier, (sometimes) darker feeling geometric shapes. But even the heavier pieces have his usual bright colors that liven up his geometric work.Read more ›
