Editorial Reviews

August 1969 to August 1970 was the most productive year of Miles Davis's career: in that short span of time, the trumpeter recorded enough material for his studio double-album Bitches Brew, a studio single album Jack Johnson, three sides of another studio double-album Big Fun, four tracks from the double-album Live-Evil...

... AND, across five nights at Bill Graham's famed Fillmore rock palaces in April and June of 1970, coast-to-coast at both the Fillmore East & West the complete, legendary concerts that will now see the light of day and be made available to fans in their entirety! MILES AT THE FILLMORE Miles Davis 1970: The Bootleg Series Vol. 3.

The searing white heat of these concerts, originally issued in severely edited form to accommodate LP sides, and without any track or song indications (e.g., "Wednesday Miles", "Thursday Miles, etc.") are now made whole. The additional 135 minutes of music in this set include a range spanning Wayne Shorter's Paraphernalia and Footprints from the earlier acoustic repertoire; to an early version of "Miles Runs The Voodoo Down" plus a RARE encore performance of "Spanish Key," compelled by the lightning-fast success of Miles's landmark studio album Bitches Brew.

This unprecedented collection tells a compelling story through its electrifying music, images, and cultural impact! In a rare, in-depth interview for art magazine Zygote II Zygote, which will be reprinted for this set, Miles--while listening to the concert playback--was "so excited about the music that he wanted every set, every note made available to the public..."

The visionary Bill Graham had booked Miles on a bill with The Grateful Dead at the Fillmore West at the April 1970 shows, and with fellow Columbia artist Laura Nyro in June 1970 at the Fillmore East run. The June shows are the earliest documented live performances of Miles s band when he hired two keyboardists--Chick Corea, and Keith Jarrett, who had been added to the band the previous month, along with saxophonist Steve Grossman who had replaced Wayne Shorter in March. The rest of the rhythm section--keyboardist Corea, bassist Dave Holland, drummer Jack DeJohnette and percussionist Airto Moreira--were in the backbone of this band throughout this explosive period.

Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea together on electric keyboards!

If you are interested in hearing an incredibly talented Miles Davis band performance as it evolves in the moment, then don't even think twice about this purchase!

This new release of the unedited versions of this music is MUCH better than the edited versions that originally came out on lp.

Everything I Was Hoping For and Much More!!!

Hi All - I've been listening to these CDs since I got them Tuesday and I'm totally floored that this material is just now seeing the light of day - at least to the general public. I, probably like most folks reading this, have been listening to Miles for decades (in fact i guess I'm a second generation fan since I'm sure my Dad started me listening to his "Main Man" while I was still in the womb back in the late 50s :). All I can say is, If you enjoy Miles' music from this period then this is an absolute must have. I LOVE it, hence the 5 star rating. I'm listening to Footprints (yeah that's right Footprints, and 11 minutes worth too!) as I type this and the performance it's absolutely magnificent.

According to the included booklet, the personnel on the Filmore East dates performed on June 17-20, 1970 are - Miles, Trumpet; Steve Grossman, Tenor & Soprano sax; Chick Corea, electric piano; Keith Jarrett, Organ; Dave Holland, bass; Jack DeJohnette, drums; Airto Moreira, Percussion, flute, vocals. The ensemble differs slightly on the three Filmore West cuts recorded on April 11, 1970. The difference being Keith Jarrett had not yet joined the group. This group is definitely in great form and in a really fantastic place in terms of projecting Miles' ideas. This performance is just about a year later that the volume 2 performances you certainly hear the transformation that has taken place over that span of time. DeJohnette and Holland lay down a tireless free funk groove throughout, and Corea, Jarrett and Airto paint endless strokes of color and texture around the pulse. Miles & Steve Grossman take turns blowing their guts out and Miles as always orchestrates the whole amalgam flawlessly.

I've been waiting for this for 20 years and it was worth waiting for. First things first. This release does not supersede the "It's About That Time" and "Black Beauty" Fillmore releases. There is zero overlap with those two releases. For some (like me) this DOES supersede "Miles Davis at Fillmore". Here's a few of the things you'll find in this collection:

The Music:

* Miles Playing on these particular Fillmore dates were a "scorched earth" demonstration. Miles took no prisoners on these nights.

* Steve Grossman's tenor playing is a revelation and blows away all of his critics.

* The wild interplay between Corea, Jarrett, DeJohnette and Holland is in context here and really makes sense, we hear those sections gradually evolve into a cacophony and then Miles calls all of his babies back home to the land of a more conventional tonality - an impressive effect in each evening's performance.

* There are 3 bonus tracks from an April 11 performance at the Fillmore West (before Jarrett joined the band). If you happen to own the Black Beauty SBM release then these tracks can be added to that release in your favorite music player software (that's what I've done anyway).

The Sound:

There is a long discussion thread going on under that "one star" review regarding the sound quality of this release. I took the time to listen to both Directions from both Wednesday Miles from the SBM 1997 release and Directions from disc 1 (Wednesday night) from this new new set. Yes there's a big difference. The 1997 SBM release has a much darker, murkier sound; clearly some "artificial" reverb was added into that original mix... nothing wrong with that, producers do that all the time.

"If you understood everything I did, you'd be me." Miles Davis.

"More than any other jazz man, he made music that had an existence beyond the dimensions of melody, harmony, and rhythm." Richard Williams.

If you're reading this you're probably a fan of Davis' later period music. But, short and sweet, this is well worth adding to your Miles Davis music collection. The newly remixed and "restored" sound overall is very good--clean (perhaps a bit to clean depending on your personal tastes--to each his own) and open sounding. The 30 page booklet contains informative and interesting pieces from producers Michael Cuscuna and Richard Seidel, track information, plus firsthand accounts from those on the Fillmore East scene at the time, and period photos. Plus there's a "poster" with a photo of Davis and articles about him. The music (including a couple of hours of unheard stuff) is presented in chronological order from June 17th through June 20th from Fillmore East, with the "extra" tracks from April 1970 Fillmore West inserted on different discs. Each of the four discs is devoted to one night's set from Fillmore East.

This music, recorded a few weeks after the release of "Bitches Brew" is one of the primary statements of Davis' "new directions in music". As far back as the "Filles de Kilimanjaro" album, new names began to appear--Corea, Holland--and with it the beginning of the end of the "old" Miles Davis group. And while "In A Silent Way" hinted that Davis was heading somewhere new, it was "Bitches Brew", which came roaring through fan's stereos, that put everyone on notice. Davis was going for it--whatever it was--a new musical direction, money, fame--who really knows. And with "Bitches Brew" Davis won Down Beat's awards for album, group, and trumpet player.

Finally!!!
So, understanding that this set covers several nights at both of the Fillmore locations, how much of the "Live at the Fillmore East (March 7, 1970): It's About That Time" set will be duplicated? It sure looks like there will be a considerable amount of duplication and that set should... Read More
