Miles to Go,
By A Customer
This review is from: And Miles to Go: The Biography of a Great Arabian Horse, Witez II (Hardcover)
The author tells an interesting story of World War II throught the eyes of a proud family who valued both their own and their horses' heritage. I have 2 Witez II descendants. I was surprised to find out about their history through this story. Very good reading for young and old.

I read this book years ago, when it first came out and have never forgotten it. If you love horses, and a great true story, you will love this book. Well written, and very well researched, you will not be able to put this one down. The odds this great stallion over came are unbelievable. Many parts of the book brought me to tears, other parts made me want to cheer. A must read for any one, adult or child.

History lives on,

My horse, Silver Phation, is a descendant of Witez II. Her maternal grand-sire is Witezon Zarzon who has since passed away. This book filled in the human "need to know" where the animal close to me came from. Thanks to Warren Fertig of Allen Dale Arabians for introducing me to the book.

I first read this book in high school and fell in love with Witez II. I later bought a descendent of his and found him very sweet, willing and smarter than his owner. I have since owned another horse, an appendix quarter horse, but can't forget my Arab. Hopefully my next horse will be another Arabian and it would be lovely to find another descendent of Witez II.

I inherited this book from my Polish great-aunt (and I happened to own a Witez grandson) and loved it and always reread it every couple of years. Learning what this horse went through the war gave me a greater appreciation for what my own family went through. While living in Thunder Bay I loaned it out to an Arabian admirer that regularly watched our gymkhanas - and I never saw him again - Did he & his daughter move back to S ON? If this is you or your family - pls contact me at d_wyant@hotmail.com - I'd like it back

It's hard to know where to start with this book. I've had it forever (I think its original list price was about $12...) and doubt I'll ever sell it. It succeeds on so many levels - as a story of an incredible Arabian stallion, Witez, bred from the best at Janow Stud in Poland; of the people who loved him throughout his life (some fiction, some real); of the standards of training and performance Arabians had to meet at Janow before they would be kept as breeding stock; of the sufferings of Poland during WWII while Russia, Germany and the Allies fought back and forth across some of its richest land; of the richly earned heritage of the Polish cavalry and their role in the war; of Patton's rescue of the "super horses" (which included the Lipizzaners but not JUST them); of how Witez was chosen to come to America and how close his owners came to not getting him and then, to wrap it up, how he performs in halter classes when his owners got sick of hearing rumors about his lack of quality (of course, he swept home a champion). It is, in many places, a breathless story, almost beyond belief, and in many others a fascinating weave of many of the historical threads that came together in WWII.
Read it because you love Arabians, read it if you love history, but find a copy somewhere and read it - you won't be disappointed.

I read this book as a teenager and was very touched by it. It is my top horse story book. Loved the human to horse relationships that were brought out and the historical facts. What a wonderful biography of a real life Arabian horse hero! A must for Arabian horse lovers!

He really did have "miles to go before he sleeps". This story touched me as a child, and remains in my heart as an adult. The courage and stamina displayed by this famous stallion is somethings that one will never forget. A great story for all ages.
