Book Description

What would you do for your best friend?

When Sean called, asking me to help him drive his parents from Wisconsin to Washington, I found out.

Sean’s mother had Alzheimer’s disease and his father was dying from lung cancer. We were taking them to their final home, an assisted living facility near Sean. And while his dad said he didn’t want it to be an ambulance ride, it was clear this wasn’t any vacation.

Sean and I had thirty years of history. He was my best friend, my first love…and, until very recently, the man I was living with. He was the man who wrote the words I’d carry in my heart my entire adult life, and the man who broke my heart.

Miles from Home is the true story of our cross-country trip, an end-of-life journey for one person and new beginnings for the rest of us. It is a story about life, death, friendship, and the choices we make. It is about the messiness of life, and, ultimately, the power of love.

This book is very well written and comes straight from the heart. Colleen makes you feel like you are living through the tough moments in life right along side her. A book that allows the reader to truly relate and feel like one with the author. I highly recommend reading this book and reevaluating the choices you are making in your own life. Don't forget to reevaluate your goals in life and refocus on what is truly important to you. In this book Colleen helped me realize how important to live in the moment and have no regrets!! Please take the time to read this book and live through the journey of life.

I laughed and cried as I read this true story of love, loss and personal sacrifices made for those dear to us. Colleen provides helpful insight into the challenges of caring for the physical and emotional needs of aging parents alonside an estranged partner without losing yourself or your sanity in the process. A great read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! May 30, 2012
By Nancy
Format:Paperback
As a nurse, myself, I found the experiences not only true to life, but described as I so often hear by other nurses. However, I also know that, since the book is written in ordinary English, lacking a lot of the medical jargon and acronyms, anyone reading this book will have a clear picture of the events and the emotions involved. I'm an avid reader and found myself not wanting to put the book down once I started. It was an easy and enjoyable read for me.
