it's all about the journey there!,

I've seen those ads for minivans with little monitors for passengers in the back seats to watch movies. Frankly, the idea of appals me! Don't our children also need a vacation from TV & movies? How much real life are they missing? How dull will our children's brains become, being force-fed with endless artificial stories?"Are we there yet?" is a question rarely asked when you bring MILES OF SMILES along on your journeys. It is a good book for travellers, chock-a-block with things to do with eyes & brains. Thinking on the move, exercising the brain cells, learning to wrap the tongue around strange words, thinking inside the head, rather than passively, staring into space as someone else's ideas reel into the mind. In my childhood, the only way we went on vacations was by family car. My mother was the driver, with my father navigating. To retain his sanity, he invented all sorts of brain teasing games. So, I was thrilled when I came upon Carole Terwilliger Meyers' handy little book MILES OF SMILES. It's perfect for a glove compartment or a seat pocket. I have, however, played many of these games with my kids on busses, trains, even 'planes. MILES OF SMILES is a book that will let you think, use your brain, get to know your family. It has a whole slew of new games to play, which can be adapted to any age passengers. In the Introduction, Carole Terwilliger Meyers even gives parents a clue as to how to entice teenagers into the games. Pick up a couple of copies of MILES OF SMILES - just in case you lose the first!

I pulled this book out when things were degrading during our 3000+ mile road trip this summer. I chose a game, everyone played and had fun. The games are simple to learn, also indexed according to age group - which helped find an appropriate game quickly. When spending so much time in the car, you need many different "tools" to make it through. This is a great one!

My 12 year old daughter enjoyed this book and my husband and I had fun interacting with her on our trip; however our 3 1/2 year old was a little left out, many games in here were too advanced for her and require basic reading skills that she has not mastered yet.

This is a wonderful book with lots of fun easy to play games, especially helpful for traveling with kids, and in this day & age of all kinds of electronic toys and gadgets it's a great way to really interact with each other.

This is for any parent who doesn't want to plug their child into the DVD player for hours on end for a long car trip. I was VERY pleased with this book. It is a compact size that can fit in the console or glove compartment. In addition, there are lots of fun games and there is even an index of the games broken out by age group! What a great product!

We played the games in this book on a two day trip to the mid-west and my kids enjoyed it. Our girls were ages 3, 5 and 6 at the time though, and most of these games and activities were too old for them. Think we'll get more use out of it as they get older. BTW, my husband came up with great car game at this time. One person impersonates a character from a book or movie and gives one clue at a time as to who they are. Whoever guesses who you are wins and gets to go next. For instance, my big, 6'1" husband said in a dainty, high pitched voice. "I love to eat apples." After everyone guessed, and got it wrong, he went on to the next clue. "I have an evil stepmother." More guesses, all wrong, so he moved on to another clue."My best friends are 7 little strange men." At that point our oldest two daughters shouted out, "Snow White!" It was hilarious! At one point I was our dog, "I like to eat out of the garbage can", and one of our daughters was Eve, "I like to dress-up in fig leaves." The funnier the clues the better.
