This review is from: Milescraft 1407 D/TFeatherBoard Dual or Tandem FeatherBoards for Router Tables and Table or Band Saws (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought these because I have had featherboards on my "to-do" list for a long time. When my "to-do" list bubbled up a job that needed a bunch of drawers made I bought a drawer lock bit which requires running the sides vertically on my shaper so I had to build a high fence and for $30 bucks, this seemed like the way to go.. Should have made this one of my first purchases when I got the shaper...Even before bits!! Feels and works great. I haven't been using featherboards (real men don't use that stuff) and I am not sure why I still have all my appendages. Comes with two sets of expansion adapters to fit mitre slots in both the table saw and shaper and also everything needed to use with T-slots. Sets up in seconds and breaks down to two single featherboard so I can put one in the mitre slot and the other on the fence. Instructions are pretty good although it is pretty intuitive. I am impressed with the quality and price and am looking more closely at other Milescraft products. If this is an example of their quality I am sure I will be acquiring more from them.

I just ordered two more sets. I have one set and could use some more, especially when I have the router table and table saw both set up. The best thing that a pair of these bought as a 1407 set cost less that two individual 1406 feather boards. Just toss the red spacer into the drawer if you don't need it. They are easy to adjust and stay put. Very good product.

this is just a really kool product with a real nice fit feel and finish. It works fantastic with myBosch 4100-09 10-Inch Worksite Table Saw with Gravity-Rise Stand Most handy for those odd rips where you need the board on edge say for angles over 45deg.

I bought this set because it was double stack, price, Amazon's free 2 day shipping, and needed them for a project I had coming up on the weekend. I had been using Rockler's ([...]) brand but these were at a fair price at the time. The very first thing I had to do was grind down the miter bars so they would fit properly in the miter slots on my ban and table saws. They were just to tight and hard to adjust. Had I have known of this problem I would have paid the extra for the Rockler brand. You know the old saying "you get what you pay for". My advice would be to order the Rockler brand. I can not comment on the other brands because I've never used them so they may be as good as Rockler, but anyway stay away from these.

I was looking for something to help in doing some resawing on my bandsaw. This double wide featherboard looked like it would make the job safer. Unfortunately, it was received missing some parts which were needed to assemble the unit. After several cycles of contacting the company, receiving the wrong parts, re-contacting them and still no correct parts, I got frustrated and just assembled the unit using whatever hardware I had lying around. Ready to do some resawing now...but it turns out that the 3/4" miter bars they supplied are too wide for the slot in the band saw table. We're talking about an extra 1/64 of an inch. After trimming the miter bar so that it fits, I pondered that I probably would have been better off had I started out by just fabricating a featherboard of my own design. I cannot recommend this product, or the company (Milescraft).

The best way I can think to explain the quality is by comparison to hair combs. There's the good kind made of heavy plastic that you can flex without breaking, and there's the cheap, lightweight, brittle kind where the tines snap off if you bend them too far. Sorry, but I'm not an expert on plastics.
Anyway, this featherboard, I discovered to my disappointment, is made of the second kind of plastic. It doesn't have the heft or flexibility of, say, the Bench Dog or Magswitch featherboard. The miter-slot sliders are made of a cheap, lightweight alloy, and the castings are very rough. They could be filed smooth, but what's the point of buying a new tool that has to be reworked out of the box? It has the "feel" of a Harbor Freight toy that should cost $5 rather than a tool that costs $25. Yes, it works OK, but it doesn't have the springiness I like in a FB and it's not worth the price, in this woodworker's opinion.

I needed a set of feather boards to help me rip some pine 4x4's down to 2-3/4". I decided on these because they come with two sizes of miter tracks, and I needed the 5/8" size to fit my benchtop table saw. The two other feather board companies I considered (Rockler & Kreg) offered only 3/4" bars.
Some reviewers noted that the bars were too wide. I took a chance anyway, and fortunately they fit (at least the 5/8" bars). The feather board plastic material is stiff, but worked well enough for its intended purpose. Stacking the two boards is done by screwing them onto a spacer. However, because there are no metal inserts, the screws will bite into the plastic spacer material when first used, so if you plan to frequently alternate between single/dual use, make sure not to strip the thread pattern by over tightening or cross threading. When ripping the 4x4's, I stacked the feather boards, and noted that the unit as a whole tends to wobble after awhile so that the top fingers will not maintain the same pressure as the lower set. I had to periodically adjust and tighten the unit. Your experience may differ depending on the fit/tolerance of your miter slots (or how much your particular saw vibrates, in my case). I also used them in single mode, and have no complaints there. They locked well and supported the work piece firmly.

This is well worth every penny. It fits all my router and table saws. I would really recommend this to everyone that uses a featherboard.

Nice featherboards, but stacking feature does not work,

This is a good deal if you are just looking for two featherboards.
The stacking feature does not work, however. The top featherboard sits 4" off the table, and it is always going to lean out a little bit under pressure. Because the featherboards are both the same size, if you set it with good pressure on the bottom one the top does not exert enough pressure. If you set it so the top exerts enough pressure, the bottom exerts way too much. I ended up making my own jig: a reinforced vertical member with spring-loaded wheels at top and bottom. |
