I played this cd ton's of times before I had put this review down here. It's 5 star's for me! He alway's serves up a great helping of Jazz piano solo's, at least for me he does! Since the late 50's I've been listening to this talent,on other peoples LP's. Jackie Mc Lean gave him a track("Don't Blame Me" on the "Capuchin Swing Album. The thing is this is his first (Under his name) Recording at the age of 33 in 1961. out of 9 tracks, 6 are double takes, and you can take your pick which one you like better. Every track here is terrific in my opinion. I have a huge Jazz piano collection. On my show in the 70's I remember playing "Killer Joe" and "You Stepped Out of A Dream" they were good performances, but this CD is the top one for me. He uses block chords, kind of a blend of Garland,Timmons,Bud,Gene Harris. There are some Bishisims : descending chords in the middle of a solo or of course some lines from other songs.
But mostly his original Idea's are paramount on the key's. His solo's on Pettiford's "Blues In The Closet" is swinging hard with the excellent Jimmy Garrison:Bass. G T Hogan Jr:Drums. "Milestones","Green Dolphin St","Alone Together" are 1 track apiece. Then 2 tracks of "Speak Low","Some Times I'm Happy" and of course,"Blues In The Closet". 62;25. I highly recommend this wonderful introduction to the Jazz piano world of Walter Bishop Jr. P.S. You should hear his block chords solo on "Head Shakin' " from the Ken Mc Intire Album;"Lookin' Forward" with Eric Dolphy.

This album was recorded in 1961 but it wasn't adequately distributed back then.
It consists of straight-ahead renditions of well-known standards. Walter Bishop Jr is in this long line of fine pianists who could hold their own on their instrument but regrettably didn't get proper recognition in their lifetime.(Check out the great Elmo Hope for example) The record is interesting and likable in many ways. First,the songs are tastefully arranged by Bishop and they all swing hard. Second, it offers a chance to hear Jimmy Garrison in a trio format. And the recording catches his warm tone clearly (not a big fan of his arco work on this though). The trio's take on Miles Davis' Milestones is the high point of the record and it should clinch your decision to get it.
Not a milestone but a nice shot of 60's piano music.

I really enjoyed this CD, it fits my mood when i am looking for something nice to listen to. Its a solidly put together album that brings reality back to the music. It lets you realize that like today not everyone playin the scene sucessfully was bud powell or art tatum, but that there were several other very talented piano players that didn't get the recognition they deserved. I enjoyed the CD and gave it three stars strictly b/c i don't enjoy hearing several takes especially when they don't differe drastically from the take chosen for the CD. anyway solid CD check it out the guy is very talented and he has a theory book called a study in fourths check that out to all together very nice cd.
