Accurate, detailed and complete graphic account of WWI,
This review is from: Military Atlas of the First World War (Hardcover)
This book is an essential companion for every First World War scholar or simply interested reader. The maps accurately illustrate the developing of operations on land and sea (including some on the submarine and mine warfare). The air war is very well illustrated as far as the zeppelin operations are concerned; I would have liked also a detailed account of bombers-fighters operations on the various fronts. Maps for the african, italian, palestinian, macedonian and mesopotamian fronts are included, together with those relating to the Western and Eastern theaters. I have found the tables on the various weapons very useful and complete. As an Italian reader I have to confess that I found the maps about the Italian front rather sketchy. Even with this little (and ultimately not much important) flaws, this is a great book, providing the reader with a definitive guide on the Great War fronts and warfare. Read it together with B. Liddel Hart's or J. Keegan's books on the conflict and you will have a reasonably complete understanding of WWI from the military point of view.

The one book about WWI you have to buy,
This review is from: A Military Atlas of the First World War (Paperback)
This book, although humbly titled "military atlas" provides all the necessary information on the first WW, from the motivations and politics, to weapon types, warfare tactics, railroad systems not only in Europe, but on all the periphal campaigns as well and by the way, you get the most comprehensive maps on the preluding balkan wars as well. The maps themselves are in black&white, but perfectly presented, with clear, sharp contrasts, so that it's very easy to read them even if you're without military background. The book succeeds in being the ideal starting point for anyone being even remotely interested in WW1. Every map is accompanied by a short summary of what's going on, most of the times even in the maps themselves which makes the information very easy to consummate. The real value of the book lies in the fact that it presents the actions and campaigns and politics without judging them, without being biased in any sort of way, may it be the old good vs. bad stereotype or the modern pacifistic viewpoint: It just provides information and what you do with it is up to you. Highly recommended.

This review is from: A Military Atlas of the First World War (Paperback)
This book astonishes me: it's full of maps that are extremely well drawn, graphically engaging, and full of interesting anecdotes and helpful information. I point out that it is 'full of maps' and you might wonder why that needs to be said: not every atlas I've purchased has had exhaustive maps (as per National Geographic Atlas of History, what a disappointment). This book has a bit of written text, but is overwhelmingly devoted to maps of all sorts. Those are just the maps: this great resource also contains organizational charts, line drawings of tanks, ships, field artillery, howitzers, and more besides. It's well bound and printed on durable, heavy paper. All of this for $14? Unbelievable. Five out of five.

This review is from: A Military Atlas of the First World War (Paperback)
This is the most complete and useful atlas of the first war that I've found. This 10 in by 7.5 inch, 338 page atlas is packed with maps and illustrations that will help you understand the individual battles and the war in general. It will be an indispensable companion as you read your other books and follow their narratives. The maps consume the whole page and include key cities, rivers, troop dispositions and movement. Included on each map are helpful comments to explain key aspects of the engagement. All the key land engagements including the Middle East, Italy and Gallipoli are included and even a few sea battles fought in the Med,North Atlantic, Arctic Ocean, North Sea, Adriatic, etc. There are even maps showing the key bombing runs of the war.The author includes many illustrations and descriptions of tanks, guns, planes, subs that will add to your reading experience. If you're looking for an atlas, you should definitely consider this one.

Useful, but not quite the best.,

This review is from: A Military Atlas of the First World War (Paperback)
Few books about World War I have anything like adequate maps, making an atlas indispensible as a supplement. This it not quite the best overall atlas for most purposes -- for that I nominate The Viking atlas of World War I -- but it good overall. The maps are all stark black-on-white and can require a quite a great deal of study to interpret. There's quite a lot of material not only on geography but on various pieces of equipment and on details of air operations. One regrettable lapse that it shares with virtually all such books is lack of any source references for its data. Since it differs with some other books on some important pieces of information, this is frustrating.
