Military Divorce Tips, for the service member, the soon-to-be-former spouse, and their attorneys, provides a solid foundation for a basic understanding of military divorce issues.   This efficient reference tool provides quick insight to the complexities involved without delving too heavily into the U.S. Codes themselves. At the same time, attorneys are able to use the footnotes if sources are needed for litigation.   An awareness of the basics can lessen the economic and emotional turmoil of divorce. Consultations with financial advisors and divorce lawyers will be more productive, less time consuming, and less expensive after reading the topics included in this book.

    4.0 out of 5 stars Wow, I guess I'm a "opportunistic greedy spouse"..., January 14, 2011
This review is from: Military Divorce Tips: Health Care CHCBP, Uniformed Services Former Spouses Protection Act USFSPA, Survivor Benefit Plan SBP, Retirement Benefits and Law Answers for Service Members and Former Spouses (Paperback)
WELL, I guess YOU would consider me as one of those so-called "opportunistic greedy spouses". I wish this book had been around in 2009. I had to learn the excruciating way--by going through a Military divorce. I met my (sadly former) husband in 1982. We were happily & blissfully in love, and were married in 1985. He had already done 1 hitch & got out before I met him. Who thinks about getting divorced??? He became increasingly verbally & emotionally abusive. But, I loved him & Military Life. I didn't want to lose either. I felt genuinely part of a large extended family. EVERY Base we went to felt like home. I truly believed (as I was told)that I was a valued part of the Family. He served his 20+ and retired 1999. That's when we finally purchased our very first home--a small home on 20 acres of heaven and things went downhill from there.
I understand how SOME women are--believe me--I heard more than one leave while their husbands were deployed, and take literally everything in the house with them. I was not one of them. I did NOT want the divorce--I wanted counseling--but apparently that doesn't matter. I was (& still am) crushed.

It seems that 24 years of marriage means nothing. Since we were married "ONLY" 14 of his 20 years served and the rest was after his retirement, I GOT NO--LET ME REPEAT--NO--BENEFITS. I receive a little over $400 each month from his RET pay. I now have to pay damn near $4000 a year for CHCBP--as opposed to the $400-something for TriCare Prime as a FAMILY. And getting a job just keeps getting harder & harder. The only thing keeping me alive is that I moved in with my elderly mother. ...how embarrassing.

And you lump us all together as "opportunistic greedy spouses"...
