4.0 out of 5 stars A Motherload, not a Motherlode, July 2, 2009

An apparent spelling error does not make it a good product, but it works. As far as I can tell, this is not a Camelbak, nor is it a Motherlode. I found this out through searching the web for instructions. Yes, I need instructions for the pack. I also need to pay more attention. I have not yet used this apparent knock-off pack but it seems to be well made and spacious. The sternum strap rides a little high for my taste. There are three covered openings for communication antennas, earphone wires, etc. and another for the bladder tube. I would have liked to have seen some suggestions for rigging the pack. The bladder comes shipped in a thin, flat compartment immediately behind the back padding but it does not appear to be designed to be installed there. Inside the main compartment, there is a pouch with an overhead opening; this is where I think the bladder goes. I have no idea what the initial bladder compartment could be used for. Papers?
I also do not have an idea what the velcro on the outside of the top compartment is for. Like I said, I need instructions.
Fair deal for the money. I think it will work for my purposes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed, December 18, 2009

I bought this pack specifically for a 3-4 day hike on the Appalachian Trail in December. My old pack wore out long ago, and I didn't want to get a full-sized pack for short trips.

This is NOT a three-day pack. It's a day-hiker or a heavy duty school book backpack. I guess that's my fault because I confused it with the other three-day packs that are $10-15 less here at Amazon. I thought that this was more expensive because it already included the bladder. This was a mistake. This pack is really just a book bag.

I'm a thin 6'1", but am much too large for this pack. With the shoulder straps adjusted so that the waist support belt reaches my hips, the chest strap that holds the shoulder straps together is in the middle of my neck. It is literally impossible to use the chest strap. Also, the shoulder strap pads are at their very ends where they sit on my shoulders. To top things off, I tried it on (empty) with a coat, and it doesn't come close to fitting.

Whoever stitched this pack did not have quality control. Some of the reinforced stitches ran off the material and are hanging loose. This is really unfortunate in places where slits have been cut and reinforced because they will fall apart with little wear.

More on the 3-day vs 1-day problem: With a pair of jeans, a set of long underwear, and a fleece pullover in the main compartment, the water bladder does not fit, let alone food for a couple of days. I was able to squeeze in a small hatchet and my first aid kit in the secondary compartment. But, this was a tight fit because the secondary compartment isn't really an extended bag like the picture might lead you to believe.

As to the product description:

Cycling: As a road cyclist, I would never wear this pack because, inter alia, the waist strap would severely limit my ability to breathe freely.

Mountain Biking: Same problem as cycling above. While the upright position will help some, this pack is a poor substitute for the plethora of packs you can find at REI, or here, specifically made for bikers/cyclists.

Snowboarding: Okay, I'm no expert here, but I don't remember ever seeing snowboarders wearing bulky packs as they tore down the slopes. If the description is referring to those guys that hike off looking for remote spots, then maybe. I don't know.

Hiking and the Great Outdoors: Yes in theory, for a day hike without any possibility of camping. But, I still do not recommend this product because of its poor quality.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not motherload, June 5, 2009

I searched for the "Camelbak Mother Load" and this item indicated that it was similar to it (which it is) yet it was not a Camelbak. Mis-leading a little I guess yet still I enjoy it.
