Very Interesting and Helpful!,
This review is from: Military Maintenance for MB/GPW Jeeps 1941-45 (Paperback)
This book is basically a collection of articles taken from wartime issues of Army Motors magazine, all concerning the maintenance and care of the MB/GPW military jeep. There are many things in them not covered in the government-issued TM's. The articles also discuss field modifications and have many interesting historical tidbits as well. Unlike the TM's, this is not at all a dry text...many of the articles are actually very humorous, as they were intentionally written that way in order to get the GI's to read them. This book would be a great addition to any MB/GPW owner's jeep library.

A step back in time...,

This review is from: Military Maintenance for MB/GPW Jeeps 1941-45 (Paperback)
No glossy colour photos of beautifully restored WW2 Jeeps here - but a step back in time to discover a goldmine of details, maintenance tips, stories, anecdotes and old photos that WW2 Jeep fans will love. The reprinted articles and sketches from wartime magazines are great. A touch of humour on nearly every page. A nice mix of factual, technical articles alongside army gossip and chitchat.
If you own an old Jeep, you will love this book. If you don't, you'll just catch a glimpse of another world...it just lacks a bit of colour (olive-drab maybe?) to get the full 5 stars.

As already described, this is a collection of articles from the 1940s Army Motors publication. The author used microfilm copies to make the book. The information is good. The ingenuity of the soldiers to make the new jeeps run is amazing. To read and learn how the newly motorized military was getting over its growing pains is truly a great read.
But the quality of many of the photographs are poor and some that are referenced in the articles are simply missing. The articles are not continuous and skip pages instead of being all on one page. The fonts switch from old, to new, to xeroxed copy... the obvious edits stand out. It would have been a much better read to scan and then convert to text. There are some nuggets of information... but most of the articles are 'background' stories not specific to the jeep (like bearings, the 'new' detergent oil and the 'new' lube and fuel outfits... many pages of good background, but little jeep specific information. I'm glad I have a copy.. it is a good read, but it is not a technical manual, a repair manual or a reference book.
