This is THE TOOL that all others are measured by. Yeah, sure, you've seen the folding shovels in the sporting goods section at the big box stores. Don't they look kinda cheap and chinsy looking? Ever thought about actually needing a shovel when you are miles from nowhere? Ever wonder what happens, when the folding shovel you brought actually breaks the first time you need it and try to use it? Yep, that's what the cheap ones do.

This tool is THE TOOL that the U.S. Marines issued for decades. As a former Marine, I'm here to tell you, these are REAL SHOVELS that you can actually work with. You can dig with them. You can chop with them. You can really get them dirty, and they can really hold up. NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING is an Ames True Temper but an AMES TRUE TEMPER Entrenching Tool.

I've got one on my backpack right now. I keep it in its trusty little ugly green rubber holder-cover (yeah, that original issue rubber dingy thing). Yes, you have to buy it seperately on Amazon. Then again, do you want to spend $10 on a cheap foreign rip-off tool that comes with its own cheap cover, and breaks the first time you try to use it, or do you want to spend the $35 for this actual working tool, and another $7 for the rubber storage case?

Short of spending $50 for a full-sized forged, fiberglass handled shovel, this is about as 'real' as it gets. Sure, if you have a truck that you plan to be camping directly out of, great, get a real full-sized shovel. BUT, if you are camping, hiking, exploring away from roads, pick-ups, etc., and you need a convenient, folding digging tool, this is the benchmark that all others are usually compared to - and fall way short of.

This is exactly what it says. A genuine us military issue E-tool. Stamped U.S. on one side and Ames 88 made in USA on the other. Should I ever need to dig a latrine or fox hole I have no doubt that this will get the job done as it has for the military for years. Its also nice that it folds up into a triangle thats 2 1/4" high, 6 1/16" wide, and 9 1/4" tall.

I cannot speak well enough for this entrenching tool. I am an avid backpacker and camper and I've used this thing to do everything from digging fire pits, latrines, digging out springs, driving stakes, removing rocks, chopping small trees. This thing is a BEAST, it's is sturdy, well made, functions well, and can take a beating. It folds up perfectly and gets very compact, and lightweight enough to be viable for long distance backpacking. I bought one of the GI Military MOLLE II Entrenching Tool Cover to attach it to my pack for room and mud concerns, and it fits very snugly within.

Just be careful when folding it up, you do have to manhandle it a little bit, and when the screw bearing is loose and you fold the shovel portion in, it can pinch your hand really bad, enough to draw blood. If you are careful and use it wisely as a tool, it will serve for many years. I've taken to leaving this, along with my Gransfors Bruks axe, below my hammock when camping in the event of a bear or coyote wandering into my camp, it's that versatile.

This shovel does what it is supposed to do. No issues whatsoever so far. Decent size, folds well, will be keeping it in the back of the Jeep.

After opening the packaging my first impression was that the shovel was well built and sturdy. After extending the shovel to it's full size you can lock it down snug. All in all, it's a great addition to a camping rig or bug out bag. Well worth the price.

I've looked at different shovels in many price ranges. Almost bought something cheaper to save a few buck. This thing is made of real steel. Not pop can thickness steel, but old school thick steel. Another shovel I saw had small aluminum pins and holding things together. This thing has large steel pins. I extended the shovel and leaned on it and there wasn't any flex in the shovel. I'm about 250. You'll not be sorry buying this. Dad always told me "you buy quality once and crap twice". This is quality.

I had one of these in the Army and recently found myself needing a small digging tool that I can easily put in pack. I remembered this and looked through a ton of little knock off folding shovels. This is the one I used in the Army and works just as I remember.
Folds up and really saves on storage space. Very solid and well made. I would recommend this for anyone trying to find that old E-Tool you used in your Military days or to anyone needing a good digging tool that doesn't take up much space. Perfect for backpackers and pretty much anyone going camping. It has a fair amount of weight, but remember I did say it is solid. It doesn't come with the little case, but you can get that easy. I spent a long time on surplus sites and found one that was perfect for old Mil gear. I found this same E-Tool but then I found this one on Amazon and the shipping was a bit cheaper so I got this one. The other site I was on was really more for Bulk orders of surplus, so ordering more than one is more ideal. I only wanted one so I saved with this one. Of course shipping prices could always change.
