Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Fifty-five of the world's greatest military and political leaders share their formulas for success

What is the key to success? To begin with, said Thomas Jefferson, "one must determine never to be idle." According to Calvin Coolidge, "Persistence and determination are omnipotent." For General Norman Schwarzkopf, successful leadership was, above all, a product of integrity. "Leadership is a potent combination of strategy and character. But if you must be without one, be without the strategy."

While the individual leaders profiled in this inspiring book had their own personal formula for success, all shared certain essential attributes. From Alexander the Great to Colin Powell, Sitting Bull to Ronald Reagan, these remarkable people possessed discipline, courage, tenacity and a willingness to take risks and learn from their mistakes. And despite vast geographical and cultural differences across far-reaching periods in time, these leaders' examples continue to teach us important lessons about achieving greatness. ,

Discover how:

  • Tecumseh forged an Indian confederacy stretching from Missouri to Canada
  • General Patton's formula for war --speed, simplicity, and boldness -- led his troops to victory
  • Queen Elizabeth I brought Britain into an age of unprecedented prosperity and growth
  • Ulysses S. Grant turned the tide in the Civil War
  • Winston Churchill led his nation through World War II and won the Nobel Prize for literature

4.0 out of 5 stars Toussaint never declared independence of Haiti, August 1, 2009

This review is from: Military and Political Leaders & Success : 55 Top Military and Political Leaders & How They Achieved Greatness (Paperback)
Military and Political Leaders & Success, by Investor's Business Daily (Editor) and William J. O'Neil (Introduction) is a book well written, explained with the simplicity of a good teacher. The syntheses of the analyzed characters follow a pattern of teaching intelligent. I recommend it.

As a researcher of colonial history, I found an important detail about the life of the black leader Toussaint Louverture that is not correct: Toussaint never declared the independence of Saint-Domingue's colony from France (p. 104). The Constitution that came into force in 1801, left Saint-Domingue as a colony, but under the mandate of Toussaint, which dislike the First Consul Napoleon Bonaparte.

The expedition sent by Bonaparte, under the command of his brother in law Victor Leclerc, who arrived in Santo Domingo in 1802, was intended to refer to Toussaint to obedience. The independence of Saint-Domingue, which adopted one of the original indigenous names of the island, Haiti, was declared on 1st. January 1804 by Jean Jacques Dessalines, after the death of Toussaint in Le Joux prison in France (7 April 1803), where he was sent by Leclerc in 1802. Francisco Bernardo Regino E., Santo Domingo. August 1st, 2009.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational!, August 10, 2005
This review is from: Military and Political Leaders & Success : 55 Top Military and Political Leaders & How They Achieved Greatness (Paperback)
This book is highly inspirational!

Most of these successful leaders had their share of challenges, weaknesses, and failures.

Despite all the odds, they had achieved an astonishing success. This fact support the contention that setbacks are the harbinger of success.

When you add persistence, integrity, vision, discipline, and innovation to the mix, significant accomplishment is almost certain.
