I am an R/C airplane/heli pilot, and I bought these ammo cans to store my LiPo batteries. The cans were a bit inconsistent... the writing was half wiped off one can, and the other is very difficult to open, even after 6 months. SMKW took almost a week to ship the items - unacceptable in this day and age for an in-stock item. Worse, they sold my name and address to at least a dozen other companies and I have been buried under a blizzard of sporting goods-related catalogs since ordering these ammo cans. Every day for about a month, I've had to call these catalog companies and request to be removed from their mailing lists. Would NEVER deal with SMKW again, and I caution everyone who is considering doing business with them.

I ordered a 2 cans based on previous reviews. I'm a little disappointed:

Yes, they are technically .50cal ammo cans, and are functional. I don't mind dings and dents and scratches and dirt. That actually adds to an "ammo can's" character.

BUT...

What disappointed me is:
- Both cans were previously "seriously dented". You can see where they pounded out dents -- like crappy "do it yourself" car fender repair: it just don't look right; you get the idea; you see the goal; but it's executed poorly. One of the cans barely seals -- Every other ammo can I've owned, you had to really pull the lid to break the seal and open it. Not this one.
- Both cans have been recently (but not freshly) painted some light pseudo-olive green. They might as well have painted flowers on it! Boooo! While this doesn't interfere with the function of the cans, it makes them feel "less authentic" -- in an aesthetic sense.

I know, I know: I hear me telling myself to shut up, sack up, too. It's not a big deal. It's not. Really. I guess it's just that when you say you're going to deliver something... you should. Maybe I just had unreasonable expectations. Who knows. I'll shut up now. Maybe I'll go paint flowers on them to help me get over it.

caveat emptor/ymmv

I bought this item based on the positive reviews. The ammo box I received was beat to hell, not just used or weathered (nothing wrong with that) but in an overall poor condition. I could have let that go, but the worst part is the letters you see in the item pictured were carelessly spray painted over in black, it serves no purpose as it makes the ammo box look worse and doesn't actually cover up the lettering. The paint smell is so strong I had to put the box outside.

This spring I'll clean it up, sand it down and repaint it. I don't like writing negative reviews but fairly disappointed - I really don't need another item on my to do list. Not worth the return shipping cost.

This thing is awesome. When I first got it, I started using it as a lunch box for a while. It's air-tight, and who cares.

Later I started using it to store my small caliber pistol rounds. Here in CA it's illegal to own .50BMG so we make do. I currently have about 4000 rounds of .22 in one, and it is very convenient to have. I have since bought two more, and use them to store my 9mm and .45 ammo. Works great, it's convenient.

I just received this ammo can today and am very unhappy with what I got. Since the description said "in fair condition" there's not much I can do but suck it up and keep it since they want almost $9 extra dollars to return it. It has a big dent in the front, the rubber seal is deteriorating, it's got dirt inside and the bottom is all scratched up like it was dragged behind a WW 2 tank. So for 30 dollars I get to repair and paint this thing. Nice! Don't waste your $$$.

I ordered mine to store batteries for my radio control electric planes. I needed a large, secure and fireproof box, since the lithium-polymer batteries which have become so popular for powering electric planes are sometimes prone to swell up or burst into flame at up to 2000 degrees F, so they're not the kind of thing to store near flammable materials or leave unprotected in a vehicle. Once it is insulated with high temperature materials I'm good to go.

These ammo boxes are larger and more capacious than most, have a solid latch, and are dirt cheap. Mine arrived in excellent condition, without rust or dents.

There are several pages on Amazon for .50 and .30 cal ammo cans, I purchased two of the ammo cans described on this page. Both of the cans I received were in excellent condition, no rust whatsoever, and only minor scratching on the bottom of the cans. My cans appear that they may have been repainted, which I have no problem with.

Anyone writing reviews complaining of black spray paint on the ammo can, or that the ammo can does not specifically say .50 or any other caliber on the side of the can (such as the 5.56mm displayed on the product page) has no idea what they are talking about. Soldiers in the field will spray paint empty cans black to mark them as empty. A soldier in the heat of battle would need to know which cans have ammo in them, and black spray paint marking empty cans makes identifying a can as empty quick and simple. Also, the .50 cal (or .30 cal for that matter) description of the can refers to the SIZE of the can, not necessarily which caliber ammo was stored in it. Although this size ammo can was initially made for the .50 BMG round, other ammunition is also stored in these same size cans, and the cans may be labelled as such.
