Just received my copy of this and read it cover to cover straight away without putting it down. It's filled with a huge variety of great artists who are making work in California and tell stories about how they ended up here. Good job Justin.

Interesting book that highlights CA contemporary artists, where they come from, what inspires them, and how they have left their mark in the art world.

Justin Van Hoy's book is a wonderful way to visit the contemporary art scene in California without leaving home. It is beautiful visually and with its combination of art, narrative on the art scene and personal reflections by the artists, it provides a deeper view of the scope of that scene than one would expect. The artist who compiled it has left a lasting tribute to this moment in time and space. The book illustrates what a loss his death shortly following its publication is to the LA arts community and to the larger world. It belongs in every college and university art history collection and on every art lover's coffee table.

This book provided a great snapshot of contemporary art in California, which is helpful considering I've lived on the East Coast my entire life. It's nice to have a tangible, well-crafted document of the current art scene, as opposed to the countless, mind-numbing blogs and Tumblr accounts covering new artists. I enjoyed that each artist provided his or her own writing, which presented each story and the work with a unique voice. The book's art direction, editing and production quality are top notch.
